A hands-on role keeping a busy heat-treatment and engineering site running smoothly. This is a great opportunity for a time-served engineer to take ownership of all maintenance activities while developing into a leadership role. You’ll be responsible for PPM, breakdowns, site services, compliance, and contractor management, ensuring safe and reliable operation across all machinery, furnaces, and plant equipment. Perfect for someone who enjoys autonomy, variety, and being the go-to person for engineering support, with the opportunity to apply and further develop basic electrical skills alongside external specialists.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Planned Maintenance & Breakdown Response
  • Deliver the full PPM schedule across the site
  • Accurately log and close out maintenance tasks
  • React quickly and safely to breakdowns
  • Plan major repairs and shutdowns with minimal disruption
  • Compliance, Safety & Site Standards
    • Ensure statutory inspections are completed (LOLER, pressure systems, LEV, electrical, fire safety)
    • Maintain guarding, interlocks, LOTO, emergency lighting, and alarms
    • Support safe systems of work including permits, RAMS, hot work, and working at height
    • Report and act on any safety concerns or machinery risks
  • Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Focus
    • Mechanical fault-finding, strip-downs, and rebuilds across furnaces, pumps, motors, conveyors, and ancillary plant
    • Bearings, belts, shafts, valves, pneumatics, hydraulics
    • Fabrication and fitting when required
    • Apply basic electrical skills for fault finding and support
    • Work alongside external electrical specialists to develop further electrical capability
    • Support machine and process improvements to increase reliability
  • Site Services & Facilities
    • Maintain compressed air, HVAC, lighting, extraction, and general building fabric
    • Highlight areas needing repair or capital investment
    • Keep the site tidy, safe, and audit-ready
  • Contractor & Supplier Management
    • Source and supervise contractors for specialist work
    • Review RAMS, issue permits, and ensure safe working practices
    • Manage costs for parts, spares, and external services
  • Cost & Energy Awareness
    • Monitor and control maintenance spend
    • Identify energy and resource waste and suggest improvements

    Essential Experience

    • Strong mechanical maintenance background in industrial/engineering/heat-treatment environments
    • Mechanical fault-finding and repair skills across plant equipment
    • Experience delivering PPM and reactive maintenance
    • Basic electrical skills
    • Understanding of safe systems of work, permits, and RAMS
    • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings
    • Hands-on, proactive approach

    Desirable Extras

    • Experience with furnaces, ovens, or heat-treatment plant
    • LEV/LOLER/pressure systems awareness
    • CI/Lean experience
    • IOSH or similar H&S qualification
