The business is creating this Functional Safety Engineer position in preparation for the retirement of their Principal Functional Safety Engineer — meaning genuine progression and development are built into the role. You’ll work across the full safety lifecycle, shaping critical design documentation, performing SIL calculations, and ensuring compliance to UK machinery and functional safety standards. Key Responsibilities
- Deliver compliant electrical control systems to BS EN 61508, and BS EN 62061
- Define, document, and validate safety functions and integrity requirements
- Produce & maintain: Basis of Design Specifications (BoD), Functional Design Specifications (FDS), Safety Design Specifications (SDS), Reliability reports & SIL calculations
- Design electrical schematics (Eplan preferred) including safety-critical devices
- Conduct and contribute to Design Risk Assessments
- Lead/support technical reviews, safety meetings & client discussions
- Validate designs using tools such as SISTEMA and Amtech
- Peer-review drawings, documents & software (internal & subcontractors)
- Support FAT/SAT with a focus on safety-performance verification
- Provide mentoring on machinery & functional safety
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety, Quality, and CDM requirements
- Manage workload to meet project deadlines & technical obligations
Essential Qualifications / Skills
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls/EC&I, or related discipline
- Expert understanding of UK machinery safety legislation
- Strong Siemens PLC/Control systems background
- Hands-on safety lifecycle documentation experience
- Proficient with BS EN 61508 / 62061
- Competent with reliability tools such as SISTEMA
- Knowledge of: laser positioning systems, encoders, variable speed drives, safety relays, high-integrity control components
- Excellent communication & stakeholder management
Desirable
- TÜV Functional Safety qualification (high priority)
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working toward
- Experience in Defence, Aerospace, Nuclear, Oil & Gas, machine build, precision automation, or other high-spec sectors
- Eplan experience
- PLC/HMI programming exposure (Siemens, Rockwell, Schneider)
