This position is responsible for maintaining, enhancing and developing the company’s financial control environment, working closely with the business function leaders to ensure successful completion of quarterly and annual SOX testing. The role leads the coordination of the external audit process, acting as the key point of contact between auditors and multiple business stakeholders in Finance and across business functions. It monitors and implements new and developing accounting and regulatory developments under various regulatory environments, continually improving finance processes and controls, and performs analysis of financial results and entity balance sheets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Controls: Lead the financial controls team, owning reporting and maintenance of the entity‑wide financial control environment. Coordinate processes that record, document and test financial controls in accordance with SOX and other regulatory requirements. Report to the Controls and Attestation Group on financial controls effectiveness and work with business functions to resolve control gaps.
  • External Audit: Lead and coordinate the external audit process to ensure completion within budget and timeframe. Liaise with business functions to provide required information and explanations to external auditors for audit of controls, financials and annual accounts. Key contact for the US IT audit function and prepare audit reports for the Senior Leadership Team and Audit Committee. Lead the completion of the ELTO (Employers’ Liability Tracing Office) annual audit.
  • Accounting and Regulatory Developments: Manage the finalisation and audit of reports and accounts for the Syndicate, UK companies and Luxembourg company in accordance with appropriate GAAP requirements. Lead the review of monthly financial results and balance‑sheet analysis, provide analysis and commentary to senior leadership around key financial metrics and trends. Monitor, understand and implement emerging accounting developments under different regimes; research and present technical training and updates to the Finance team. Lead the Finance Team’s ESG reporting and disclosure project, research and document requirements, and collate GHG data for streamlined energy and carbon reporting. Liaise with the Chicago head office technical accounting function.
  • Other Responsibilities: Ensure compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements. Work effectively with internal stakeholders and Finance teams in London, Chicago, Luxembourg and Norwich. Lead, motivate and develop a small team of accountants, including review of journals and monthly account reconciliations. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) with 3‑5 years post‑qualified; preferred background in external audit from a Big 4 firm.
  • Strong technical knowledge of insurance accounting (company market and/or Lloyd’s), Solvency II reporting and accounting principles.
  • Demonstrated understanding of business objectives and the market in which the company operates.
  • Intellectual curiosity, excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills, and strong communication abilities.
  • Management and leadership skills with the ability to plan, organise and own the role effectively.
