Company Overview
Checkout.com – a global network powering billions of transactions every year, delivering seamless digital payments for companies such as eBay, ASOS, Klarna, Uber Eats and Sony.
Role Overview
We’re looking for an experienced Employee Relations Manager to design and elevate our global ER approach. This is not a full‑time case‑handling role; instead you will build the systems, tools, policies and capabilities that enable our People teams and managers to confidently handle ER matters at scale, while acting as a backup subject‑matter expert for complex or sensitive cases when required.
Key Responsibilities
- Build & Enhance Employee Relations Capability – develop a clear ER strategy and operating model aligned with our business structure, risk appetite and future scale, and create modern, user‑friendly playbooks, frameworks and toolkits for People Partners and managers.
- Training & Capability Uplift – develop and deliver structured training for People Partners, managers and leaders on ER best practices, investigations, performance management and policy application; facilitate quarterly simulation training using real Checkout case patterns.
- Policy Ownership & Expansion – audit and benchmark existing ER policies, simplify and clarify where possible, draft and implement updated and new policies, and build a globally consistent yet locally adaptable policy architecture.
- Process Redesign (Including AI Integration) – assess and strengthen case management practices, embed AI into workflows (case intake, document drafting, triage tools, risk detection, theme identification), and define governance, controls and safe‑use practices for AI‑supported tools in partnership with Legal, Tech and Compliance.
- Advisory & Escalation Support – act as a strategic advisor for complex and sensitive cases, provide high‑quality support for high‑risk or high‑complexity cases, drive consistency and fairness through case reviews and calibration, and serve as the primary escalation point for ER appeals and critical decision reviews.
- Risk Management & Culture – use ER data, insights and trends to identify behavioural themes, systemic risks and proactive intervention opportunities; partner with People, Legal and business leaders to design interventions that strengthen trust, fairness, accountability and performance discipline.
Qualifications
- Minimum ~6 years of experience in a dedicated ER role (e.g. ER Manager or ER CoE) with proven design and implementation of ER frameworks, policies and tooling.
- Experience operating in a global business with employees across multiple regions.
- Strong investigative skills and a deep understanding of employment law across multiple regions.
- Proven ability to build policy, processes and training from scratch or in a rapidly evolving environment.
- Experience integrating AI tools or technology into HR/ER processes (or a strong appetite to develop this skill).
- Excellent communication, coaching and influencing skills; high integrity, sound judgment, discretion and a balanced, pragmatic approach.
Benefits & Working Model
Hybrid working model with flexibility – three days per week in the office to support collaboration and connection.
