The Data Center team designs and operates some of the most sophisticated electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and HVAC systems in the world.

Facilities Technicians at Google data centers operate, monitor and support physical facilities conditions.

Some of these duties will include heating and cooling of air and water, power supply, generators, UPS systems, electrical distribution and control and monitoring systems.

You regularly help inspect, maintain and repair various data center systems such as piping and non-critical electrical or mechanical system components).

As an advocate for best practices, you develop creative approaches to reducing operational costs while improving overall data center efficiency.

You ensure that environmental and safety standards are consistently met, identifying problems and making repairs quickly.

In emergency situations or abnormal conditions, you manage data center performance issues and outages to minimize the recovery time from failures.

As a Data Center Operations Plant Engineer, you are a leader of exceptional environmental practices.

You will design and operate some of the most sophisticated and efficient electrical and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems using 50% less energy than most data centers around the world.

You will continually seek different approaches to reduce operational costs while improving efficiencies through the operation and maintenance of Low Voltage/Medium Voltage/High Voltage (LV/MV/HV) Electrical systems and control and monitoring systems.

You have a electrical background and are a technology enthusiast who not only enjoys being challenged by problems of scale and complexity but also has a strong desire to make services better for users while doing better for the environment.

Minimum qualifications

  • Associate's degree, trade school certification, or other certified training in a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7 years of Electrical experience (e. g., electrical testing equipment or electrical distribution) in an industrial or commercial environment.
  • Ability to participate in material handling tasks such as lifting, carrying or moving up to 50 lbs (23 kg) of equipment, the required use of safety equipment such as limited weight bearing work platforms, ladders, step stools and personal protective equipment (PPE) like safety harnesses in accordance with safety and ergonomic guidelines and assessments.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours and differing work rotations/shifts.
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Electrotechnical qualification (or equivalent NVQ Level 3), holding a valid ECS Gold Card and current 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) certification.

Preferred qualifications

  • Certification as an HVAP/LVAP (High Voltage Authorised Person / Low Voltage Authorised Person) is strongly preferred.
  • 7 years of experience in maintenance of electrical distribution systems or construction/technical environment or a related field.
  • Experience in data centers, hospitals, or power plants.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems used in a data center environment (e. g., feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, ATS/STS units, PDU/PMM units).
  • Understanding of PUE/WUE and energy efficiencies of a plant.

Responsibilities

  • Provide effective leadership for successful critical system troubleshooting, unit commissioning, repairs/replacements with little to no supervision in quality, quantity and timeliness as assigned.
  • Operate critical plant equipment as authorized by facilities manager.
  • Coordinate input for global facilities programs such as in electrical, Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), Building Management System (BMS), energy savings, training and thermography.
