As an Associate Legal Counsel for the Google Research organization in EMEA and other jusrisdictions, you will act as a primary legal partner to Google’s frontier research teams, advanced labs, education and health AI groups.
You will advise on complex, first-of-their-kind commercial partnerships, data sharing agreements, content licensing agreements, and collaborative research frameworks that push the boundaries of technology and society.
You will guide technical teams through complex legal challenges while ensuring alignment with global product risk parameters and emerging EMEA regulations.
Minimum qualifications
- JD, LL. B., equivalent degree, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3 years of attorney-level experience in government, in-house, or at a law firm.
- Experience in technology transactions, commercial contract negotiation, and intellectual property counseling within an in-house corporate legal department or law firm.
- Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law (e. g., have registered in-house status) in the UK or an EU member state.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience advising on complex research collaborations, IP licensing, data privacy frameworks (GDPR), bioethics, and health-tech/Health AI applications.
- Experience working with technology companies and ability to understand complex technical issues.
- Strong understanding of software development models, open-source licensing, and foundational artificial intelligence/machine learning legal challenges.
- Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable legal advice for non-legal stakeholders.
- Superb organizational skills with a track record of managing a high volume of complex agreements simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Draft, review, and negotiate complex, high-stakes strategic partnerships, academic collaborations, and data-sharing agreements for the EMEA Research, Labs, Tech & Society, and Education & Learning ecosystem.
- Provide actionable, cross-functional legal counsel on emerging tech and health regulations across EMEA, including General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance, health data governance, and the EU AI Act.
- Partner closely with Product, Engineering, Bioethics, and Trust & Safety teams (including other product teams) to identify, evaluate, and mitigate legal risks in frontier AI and health-tech development pipelines while enabling bold, responsible innovation.
- Maintain and refine scalable legal templates, playbooks, and intake protocols to streamline the EMEA Partnerships workflow.
