The Role
This client is looking for a Structural Engineer to strengthen the technical capabilities of the group. You should be competent in structural analysis in key areas including but not limited to RC frame, Temporary Structures, Demolition and Temporary Works from standard to complex solution.
The Key Functions
- To advise/supervise junior members of the team or trainees
- To carry out design checking of other team member’s or 3rd party designs
- To provide design output and methodology as necessary for the construction and removal of Temporary Works as requested by various sites.
- To liaise as necessary with the site TW Coordinator to ensure the design brief is fully understood so that the design process from preliminary to construction issue is carried out efficiently and correctly reflects the site needs. This may involve site visits to discuss the methodology with the site team.
- Occasionally, if requested by the site team for complex or unusual TW, to visit site to carry out a supplementary inspection of the TW prior to loading.
- To liaise with clients engineers, consultants and suppliers, as necessary to deal with issues relating to the TW.
- To provide support and advice in areas of demolition/structural to the HO tendering team as and when requested for inclusion in the technical bid documents.
The Responsibilities
- To produce designs in compliance with the TW procedure from receipt of the design brief to construction issue of the drawings in a timely manner.
- To comply with relevant current design codes, standard practices, CDM and Health and Safety requirements including identifying residual risk in the preparation of TW designs.
- To utilize available stock equipment and materials in TW designs wherever possible.
- To maintain good housekeeping by recording and filing all design work in the TW department electronic files, keeping hard copies where appropriate, and keeping drawing registers up to date.
The Requirements
- Competence in structural analysis and an appropriate engineering degree.
- Demonstrate competence in key areas such as demolition and structural support.
- Comprehensive understanding of construction methodology and design principles relating to Temporary Works and the temporary loading of permanent works.
- Computer literacy and ability to use CAD and FEM software packages.
- Effective communication, both orally and in writing. Ability to compile Method Statements, reports and other documentation for formal submission.
- A wide knowledge of construction materials and products.
- A thorough understanding of Health and Safety Regulations and legislation and of Designer’s responsibility under CDM regulations.
