As part of Arup’s Climate and Sustainability Services, our Environment team is at the forefront of delivering Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) for some of the UK’s most transformative projects. We collaborate across disciplines to influence nationally significant initiatives – from pioneering renewable energy schemes like the Ocean Winds Offshore Wind EIA, to advancing sustainable transport through the West Yorkshire Mass Transit programme and driving critical infrastructure upgrades such as the Great Grid Upgrade and Thames Tideway. We’re looking for consultants who are naturally curious, passionate about technical excellence, and eager to lead on the environmental agenda. You’ll play a key role in embedding sustainability into every project we deliver, helping shape solutions that make a lasting impact.

The Opportunity

The position is for a Senior Environmental Consultant to be based in the North and focused on delivering environmental impact assessments for major national infrastructure projects in transport, water and energy across the UK. Clients will range from renewable energy developers to public sector authorities and from large organisations to start-ups. You will be working in a global multi‑disciplinary team alongside other environmental, planning, engineering and urban design specialists to deliver industry‑leading environment and sustainability consultancy services.

Your Remit

You will undertake technical work, supporting technical leads on projects, assist teams with proposal preparation and support team leaders in delivering major projects. You will be responsible for:

  • Writing sections of environmental reports including EIA screening letters, EIA scoping reports, non‑technical sections of Environmental Statements, and reviewing technical inputs for alignment with project details and EIA compliance.
  • Inputting into environmental design and applying environmental‑led design principles.
  • Contributing to bids and presentations.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education to degree level, preferably a master’s degree.
  • Member of an appropriate institute, full membership or working towards full membership (e.g. Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals or equivalent).
  • Some experience coordinating EIAs, successfully working with teams of technical specialists and multi‑disciplinary teams.
  • Understanding of environmental legislation, experience applying relevant legislation, policy and guidance in impact assessment for a range of project types.
  • Good analytical skills with a focus on finding solutions, particularly in relation to assessment delivery and bringing together multi‑disciplinary teams.
