Job Title: Motor Vehicle Lecturer

Location: Southend-on-Sea, Essex

Salary: £35,000 – £45,000 per annum (depending on qualifications and experience)

Contract Type: Full-time / Part-time | Permanent or Fixed-term

Job Purpose:

To deliver high-quality teaching, learning and assessment in Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair to students aged 16+, apprentices, and adult learners. This role is pivotal in preparing students for a successful career in the motor vehicle industry by providing hands-on training and industry-aligned knowledge.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach Motor Vehicle programmes from Entry Level to Level 3, including full-time study programmes, apprenticeships, and adult short courses.
  • Deliver both theoretical and practical sessions in subjects such as vehicle servicing, diagnostics, braking systems, suspension, engines, transmissions, hybrid/electric vehicle awareness, and MOT prep (if applicable).
  • Develop schemes of work, lesson plans, learning materials, and assessments in line with awarding body requirements (City & Guilds, IMI, or equivalent).
  • Assess, track, and record learner progress, setting clear targets and providing regular, constructive feedback.
  • Support learners with pastoral care and academic progress, helping them overcome barriers to learning and stay engaged.
  • Maintain a safe, efficient, and well-organised workshop and ensure all practical activities are compliant with health and safety and safeguarding standards.
  • Engage in standardisation, internal verification, and quality assurance processes.
  • Collaborate with the wider engineering team to support curriculum development and employer engagement.
  • Participate in open events, enrichment activities, and other college functions as required.

Essential Criteria:

  • Level 3 qualification or higher in Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair (Light Vehicle or equivalent).
  • Recent and relevant industry experience in the motor vehicle sector.
  • Recognised teaching qualification (PGCE, CertEd, Level 5 DET), or a willingness to work towards one.
  • Strong workshop management skills and a commitment to health and safety.
  • Effective classroom delivery and a passion for learner achievement.
  • Knowledge of current automotive industry practices and emerging technologies (e.g. electric/hybrid vehicles).
  • Good IT skills and familiarity with digital tools used in teaching and assessment.

Desirable:

  • Assessor (TAQA, A1) and/or IQA (V1) qualifications.
  • Experience with apprenticeship standards and End Point Assessment (EPA) preparation.
  • MOT Tester accreditation or experience in hybrid/electric vehicle maintenance.
  • Experience working with students with SEND, EAL, or those requiring additional support.
