Principal Systems Engineer
Salary – Β£70,000-Β£85,000, depending on experience
UK Security Clearance is required to be considered for this position.
Copello have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Principal Systems Engineer to join a leading organisation delivering complex and critical projects within the defence, nuclear, and space sectors. This is a key role offering the chance to take ownership of high-value, technically challenging projects throughout the full engineering lifecycle
The Role:
As Principal Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, development, and delivery of engineering solutions, working from initial concept through to integration, verification, and operational handover. This includes defining system specifications, developing system architectures, and ensuring compliance with performance, safety, and regulatory standards. You will play a crucial role in ensuring projects are delivered to time, cost, and quality requirements while managing stakeholder expectations at all levels.
Key Responsibilities:
β’ Lead and manage systems engineering activities throughout the full project lifecycle
β’ Develop system architecture, specifications, and requirements using a structured systems engineering approach
β’ Ensure systems meet performance, safety, and regulatory standards through robust V&V processes
β’ Conduct risk identification, assessment, and mitigation planning
β’ Provide expert guidance and engineering oversight on complex defence, nuclear, or space programmes
β’ Produce high-quality technical documentation and evidence to support regulatory requirements
β’ Act as a technical mentor, supporting the development of junior staff
About You:
β’ 8+ years of demonstrable experience as a Systems Engineer in highly regulated environments
β’ Strong background in defence, nuclear, or other highly regulated industries.
β’ Expertise in systems architecture, modelling, risk analysis, verification & validation
β’ Knowledge of relevant UK and international engineering standards
β’ Ability to analyse complex technical requirements and deliver innovative solutions
β’ Proficiency in systems engineering tools (e.g., DOORS, MBSE tools, MS Project, etc.)
β’ Relevant technical qualification (Apprenticeship / BSc / MSc in Engineering or related discipline)
