Our Public Services team is passionate about delivering high-quality education to students aged 16 and over, preparing them for meaningful careers in sectors such as policing, fire and rescue, the armed forces, and emergency services. We work collaboratively to create an engaging learning environment that encourages personal development, high achievement, and progression. The team actively works with local employers and public service organisations to create valuable opportunities for student placements, work experience, and career progression.

About The Role

As a Lecturer in Public Services, you will design and deliver stimulating and relevant lessons that inspire and motivate learners. You will provide high-quality developmental feedback to support student progress and help them achieve their full potential. Your role includes developing and managing specific programmes, acting as a course leader, and leading internal verification processes where needed. You will work closely with public service employers and external partners to facilitate work placements and real-world learning experiences, enhancing students’ career prospects. You will contribute to curriculum development, participate in recruitment and outreach events, and ensure compliance with safeguarding and quality assurance standards.

This role is part time, 0.5 FTE (18.5 hours per week).

About You

You are a passionate and engaging educator with a relevant degree or professional qualification, ideally with experience working in or delivering education related to public services. You hold, or are working towards, a recognised teaching qualification and have a proven track record of delivering stimulating lessons that engage post-16 learners. You are skilled at providing constructive, developmental feedback to support student growth. You have strong organisational and communication skills, can work both independently and collaboratively, and are committed to safeguarding and promoting equality and diversity. Experience working with public service employers to create learning and placement opportunities is highly desirable, as is assessor/verifier qualification or programme leadership experience.

Principal accountabilities

  • To be responsible for developing and co-ordinating a specific programme or development within a programme area or across the University.
  • To act as a personal tutor, course leader, and Lead IV as required.
  • To take an active part in course team meetings and activities.
  • To lead a team, if required.
  • To develop and maintain high quality standards in line with the demands of the Common Inspection Framework.
  • To participate in monitoring visits for students on work placement.
  • To take an active part in the University’s Staff Development Programme to ensure flexible and responsive curriculum delivery.
  • To take an active part in all extra curricula activities, including open days, recruitment events and external moderation processes.

General Duties

  • To undertake such class contact duties for the grade as are laid down in the University FE Academic Contract.
  • To teach effectively (including the necessary preparation) using a variety of methods on appropriate programmes as directed by the subject Curriculum Leader.
  • To maintain currency with and operate within the demands of the Common Inspection Framework.
  • To assess and record students’ progress on a regular basis by appropriate means e.g. marking, profiles, learning agreements, action plans, records of achievement etc.
  • To respond to the personal and social needs of students in the learning situation.
  • To prepare programmes of work and lesson plans, set assignments, tests, examinations, marking schemes.
  • To ensure that all appropriate administrative records are accurately completed and maintained in accordance with University procedures, e.g. enrolment forms, attendance registers, student Individual Learning Agreements or training plans.
  • To ensure that students behave in a responsible manner to a high standard of safety in classrooms, practical areas and around the University campus.
  • To ensure relevant links with outside agencies, education support services, parents and employers.
  • To undertake any other administrative and teaching duties which may, from time to time, reasonably be required within the general level of responsibility of the post, as agreed with the Curriculum Leader.
  • To comply with the requirements of Health & Safety, other relevant legislation and University documentation.
  • To understand and comply with the University’s Equality and Diversity Policies.
  • To comply with copyright and software licensing legislation and related University procedures.
  • To undertake appropriate training and Continuing Professional Development activities as requested by the Curriculum Leader.
  • To work with support staff, programme and course teams as appropriate.
  • To participate in and contribute to curriculum development.
  • To ensure that the College’s Quality Assurance Procedures are completed and actioned.
  • To contribute to the marketing activities of the College.
  • To comply with the requirements of Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults, Prevent, Health and Safety, Quality and other University policies including Equal Opportunities, Risk Management and Equality and Diversity.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications

  • Hold or be working towards a teaching Qualification e.g. BEd, Cert. Ed., DTLLs or equivalent
  • Relevant degree or professional qualification or equivalent
  • Level 2 Qualifications (either in Functional Skills or GCSE A-C) in both English and maths or a willingness to achieve within an agreed timescale

Experience

  • Demonstrable evidence of ability to engage with learners to support high quality learning outcomes
  • Experience of delivering teaching or training programmes to post 16 age group
  • Experience of delivering high quality provision in line with national benchmarks

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Detailed knowledge of appropriate qualifications associated with the subject area
  • Knowledge of the latest developments in Education and Training
  • A knowledge / awareness of and commitment to strategies which promote equality and diversity
  • A knowledge of appropriate progression routes for learners
  • Highly developed communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively on your own and with a small team
  • Well-developed administrative and organisational skills
  • Ability to lead a team
  • Good time management skills.
