About our Team
At Cell Press, part of Elsevier’s premium portfolio of STM Journals, we collaborate with researchers to facilitate the publication of their impactful scientific discoveries, focusing on rigorous peer review, ethics, and reproducibility. Supporting our portfolio of over 50 hybrid and open access scientific journals, you will actively contribute to advancing science, improving health outcomes, and fostering equitable participation in publishing.
About the Role
The Publishing Director (PD) will lead a team of Editors-in-Chief and other editorial teams across various subject areas and geographies to grow and develop the journal portfolio, measured against key business metrics. The PD will also participate in strategic initiatives across STM Journals or Elsevier more widely. This position is open to the movement of key individuals to other roles in the organization presenting an excellent opportunity for an experienced publishing and editorial professional to play a proactive role in optimizing publishing opportunities for Life and Medical Sciences in a changing policy and funding landscape.
Responsibilities
Strategy and Planning
- Define strategy across 11 leading life and medical science journals at Cell Press-level strategic planning and target-setting process working with strategy, marketing, finance, and senior management teams.
Relationship Building
- Understand the research environment, maintain a network, and engage in complex industry discussions with high-level stakeholders.
- Support and mentor team members in external discussions and networking, making relevant connections.
- Recognize key external customer trends and collaborate with the team to drive innovation.
Portfolio Management and Development
- Take ownership of the overall strategy for the group of journals and manage its delivery.
- Collaborate with functions or central initiatives that have overarching PMG relevance.
- Provide guidance and data analytics support mentoring Editors-in-Chief on development, planning, managing editorial teams and boards, help set priorities, define scope, competitive positioning and define content recruiting strategies for their journals.
- Lead key cross-functional strategic initiatives.
- Use data and analytics to assist in competitive positioning and to define additional journal launches to aid the publishing of high-quality scientific content.
Daily Operations Management
- Address issues escalated to the PD level.
- Collaboratively resolve publishing-wide issues with the PD peer group.
- Support Editors-in-Chief in engaging with internal centers of expertise.
- Achieve and exceed publishing and performance results.
Requirements
- A minimum of 10 years of relevant publishing and editorial experience, with a deep understanding of journal development. A PhD or MD in a relevant field is strongly preferred, along with a history of strong performance delivery.
- A passion for science, specifically in medical and life sciences and helping the research community find a home at Cell Press and Elsevier.
- A keen awareness and understanding of the global publishing industry and related industry/research/policy drivers.
- A strong customer focus and desire to aid in their success.
- Ability to build a network of high-level contacts within the scientific community, translating customer needs into data-driven strategies.
- A proven track record of building productive internal relationships, including leading and collaborating with project teams.
- Experience in leading and developing successful teams across multiple international locations.
- Strong analytical skills to identify key opportunities in the market to better support scientific growth through the Life and Medical Sciences portfolio.
- Experience in strategy and innovation to lead the development of business strategies and product development, demonstrating creativity in developing new commercially viable opportunities that serve the scientific community.
- Willingness to travel 10-20% globally.
