The Defra Group Security function within Digital, Data Technology and Security (DDTS) is looking for a Physical Security Advisor – Built Assets.

In this role you will play a vital role in helping the Defra group create safe, secure spaces for our staff and assets.

In Defra, this specialist position ensures security is built into every stage of our projects, whether it’s designing new spaces or transforming existing ones. From planning to constructions to operation, you’ll make sure security risks are identified and addressed. Working closely with stakeholders to deliver spaces that are resilient and ready to face potential threats. Guided by ISO 23234:2021, this is your chance to make a real impact on how we protect what really matters!

Please note this post requires Security Check (SC) clearance. To gain (SC) clearance all applicants are required to have been a UK resident for a minimum of 5 years. If this requirement is not met, the individual will not be able to progress their application further.

Responsibilities

  • Embed security requirements into the project from the early design stages through to completion, including post-occupancy.

  • Work with project teams, architects, civil engineers, and external stakeholders to ensure security measures are practical and do not hinder other project priorities.

  • Conduct security risk assessments and give guidance on implementing necessary controls.

  • Ensure ongoing compliance with relevant security standards and legislation throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Review security mitigations developed by external contractors to assure Defra group risk owners they achieve the required security effect.

  • Develop a Security Management Plan (SMP) tailored to the specific project, outlining security requirements and strategies.

  • Regularly review project plans, designs, and construction activities to ensure alignment with the SMP and conduct audits to verify compliance.

  • Membership of the Security Institute, and accredited on the Register of Security Engineering & Specialists (RSES), or equivalent experience and willingness to work towards the certification.

  • Comprehensive understanding of ISO 23234:2021 Planning security measures in the built environment is critical. The advisor must be able to interpret and apply the standard to various project scenarios, ensuring compliance throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Experience in conducting security risk assessments, including identifying potential threats, assessing vulnerabilities, and evaluating the impact of risks on built assets.

  • Knowledge of how to develop and deploy effective risk mitigation measures tailored to the specific threats and vulnerabilities identified during the assessment.

  • Understanding of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) methods to incorporate security into the physical design of the asset, such as through layout, lighting, landscaping, and access control.

  • Detailed knowledge of physical security systems (e.g., CCTV, access control, intrusion detection) and how to specify, evaluate, and integrate these into the design and construction of built assets.
