Our Business

Fairport Tunnelling Technologies (FTT) became a newly established division of Fairport Engineering Limited in 2021. Fairport Engineering Limited have now been acquired by pxGroup and as a result FTT has now become pxFairport.

We are an Engineering and Projects Delivery business specialising in the design, installation, management and consultancy of bulk material handling systems across a number of sectors, with specific expertise in tunnelling, aggregates and ports. With long standing industry expertise, our recent history includes successfully delivering projects in the UK, Europe and Asian markets.


The Opportunity

The Lead Design Engineer will work closely with the wider engineering team, project management and procurement teams to ensure that products meet customer needs whilst focusing on safety, quality, cost, and on-time delivery.

A major element of the role is the management of large composite models, equipment interfaces and top-level assemblies, as well as driving standardisation across the project.

Key Responsibilities

The Lead Design Engineer will work closely with the wider engineering team, project management and procurement teams to ensure that products meet customer needs whilst focusing on safety, quality, cost, and on-time delivery.
A major element of the role is the management of large composite models, equipment interfaces and top-level assemblies, as well as driving standardisation across the project.

  • Utilise computer-aided design (AutoCAD, Solid Edge, Inventor, Tekla) software to create drawings and schematics of sites, parts, assemblies, and technical documents.
  • Produce overall site layouts and schemes for projects, which will be shared with the client and reviewed on a regular basis.
  • Develop drawings from notes, sketches, existing drawings, design concepts, verbal instruction, and engineering specifications.
  • Document updates to designs and ensure any changes are recorded in accordance with pxFairport’s engineering change procedure.
  • Promote standard design and working towards the 80% reuse and 20% new.
  • Provide support and assistance to project engineers as required to suit the needs of the project.
  • Provide client facing activities, lead the design and the generation of specifications on minor study works as required.
  • Provide guidance to designers and detailers ensuring best practice is adopted.
  • Co-ordinate and validate works conducted by design team and 3rd party designers.
  • Lead engineering “cost out” / value engineering of current designs and components.
  • Carry out interface checking of the mechanical and structural teams’ models
  • Collaborate with the project team in design reviews and follow up on actions.
  • Ensure that all work conforms to the latest industry standards (BS, ISO).
  • Support the Group Head of Design (GHoD) with KPI driven performance measures, On-Time delivery, Accuracy, Standardisation, Recovery Rate.
  • Mentor junior members of staff.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Minimum of HNC in mechanical engineering with a recognised time served apprenticeship.
  • Experience in bulk material handling within a similar design role environment.
  • An understanding of heavy engineering, bespoke engineered technical solutions and process plant design including equipment such as, but not limited to, belt and screw conveyors, elevators, screens, crushers, shredders, filtration and pneumatic conveying systems, within the mineral, chemical and food processing industries .
  • Experience in value engineering processes and continuous improvement
  • Proficient in 3D drawing packages, Solid Edge or Inventor, (Tekla considered).
  • Proficient in AutoCAD 2D drawing package.
