Overview

The post holder will act as a Unit Manager, deputising for the Clinical Lead. They will supervise the Nuclear Medicine Team to deliver a high-quality Nuclear Medicine service and contribute to the service\’s development and direction. They will deputise in line management for the Clinical Lead as required and bring extensive experience in all aspects of Nuclear Medicine, including radiation protection and the regulatory framework relevant to Nuclear Medicine. They will adhere to and promote Trust values in carrying out their role. The post is subject to early close if we receive high numbers of applications.

The post holder will ensure the continuous provision of a safe, professional, and high-quality Nuclear Medicine service to patients and other service users. They will ensure Nuclear Medicine Department procedures comply with local and national regulations, guidance, and the legislative framework.

The post holder will supervise, formulate and audit all training competency documents to maintain a framework for the training of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. This includes competencies for administration of radiopharmaceuticals, use of complex equipment, IV cannulation and ECG interpretation, and supervising and developing other medical staff within the Nuclear Medicine Team on a daily basis.

The post holder will take sole responsibility for leading the Cardiac Stress sessions within the Nuclear Medicine Department, including direct supervision of junior colleagues during the session. The Advanced Practitioner role includes supervision and responsibility for the safe dosage and administration of pharmacological stress agents such as Adenosine. The post will require detailed knowledge of ECG interpretation to recognise changes detrimental to patient safety without supervision, and knowledge of drug interactions and potential adverse effects related to the procedure.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300. It provides inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital and a wide range of community services. The Trust houses the full range of district general hospital services; a £170 million development completed in 2010 and ongoing upgrades have provided state-of-the-art facilities, including a Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit. A new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre opened in March 2023, significantly improving emergency care facilities.

Responsibilities

• Act as Unit Manager and deputise for the Clinical Lead; supervise the Nuclear Medicine Team to ensure high-quality service delivery.
• Contribute to the development and direction of the Nuclear Medicine service; support line management for the Clinical Lead when required.
• Ensure compliance with local and national regulations, guidance, and legislatory framework; uphold Trust values.
• Supervise and audit training competency documents for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, including radiopharmaceutical administration, complex equipment use, IV cannulation and ECG interpretation; develop other medical staff within the team.
• Lead Cardiac Stress sessions, supervise junior colleagues, and ensure safe administration of pharmacological stress agents (e.g., Adenosine); maintain detailed ECG knowledge to safeguard patient safety; understand drug interactions and potential adverse effects.
• Maintain and deliver a high-quality, effective service; align practice with team direction, policies, and strategies.
• Promote ongoing improvement and development; challenge current practices constructively.
• Demonstrate extensive expertise and specialist knowledge; apply planning, organisation, delegation, and resource management to the team and service.
• Process complex Medicine data using software for quantitative and qualitative analysis; recognise pitfalls to prevent reporting errors.
• Ensure Health and Safety compliance throughout the Nuclear Medicine and Imaging Department.
• Formulate and audit risk assessments, COSHH, fire safety, DSE assessments; liaise with Governance and Health and Safety leads to maintain a well-led service.
• Develop business continuity and contingency planning within the Nuclear Medicine Department; rehearse and document plans as required by Local Rules.
• Manage risk in the workplace, including physical, data, and staff wellbeing risks; audit Local Rules compliance with Medical Physics Expert (MPE) and Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017; update patient information leaflets and consent materials and clinical protocols.
• Provide specialist information to external Regulatory Authorities regarding consent and permits; apply for Employer License and ARSAC licenses as required.
• Prepare reports for Environment Agency inspections (e.g., EA, CQC, HSE) as needed; submit annual waste disposal figures to the Radioactive Waste Advisor for EA submission.
• Draft correspondence and organise contracts and service level agreements for departmental equipment.
