The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Health Information Management has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Outpatient Coder 3 to work in Miami, FL. Under the general direction of the Outpatient Coding Manager, the Outpatient Coder 3 reviews documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) and assigns and sequences ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and CPT procedure codes in accordance with national coding guidelines. The primary focus of this role is to capture all encounter-specific diagnoses and procedure codes for accurate reimbursement, data collection, and research purposes.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Review, analyze, and interpret the entire electronic medical record (EMR) to identify all diagnoses and procedures documented during a patient’s admission.
  2. Follow guidelines and knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and disease processes.
  3. Review documentation and reach out to physicians for additional information when information for proper coding is missing or incomplete.
  4. Assign codes to outpatient records for use in reimbursement and data collection.
  5. Comply with policies and procedures and maintain confidential patient records.
  6. Report unusual circumstances, risk factors, errors, and discrepancies to management.
  7. Consistently maintain coding accuracy and productivity standards of ≥ 95%.
  8. Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.

Department Specific Functions

  1. Sign into Microsoft Teams for quick and easy communication between management, supervisor, and colleagues.
  2. Review Priority work queue each morning to rectify any accounts that have been returned due to missing documentation, physician query response, ADT correction.
  3. Daily review of OP Claim edit.
  4. Code Ambulatory Surgery, Infusion, Radiation Oncology, Outpatient, Emergency Medicine, Interventional Cardiology, Observation, Wound Care and Therapy accounts.
  5. Mandatory daily review and reconciliation of any pending audit reviews.
  6. Code high dollar accounts as assigned by the supervisor or manager.
  7. Check email often for correspondence from OP coding supervisor/manager, CDI, IT, CBO.
  8. Attend all scheduled meetings.
  9. Participate in team education sessions and continuing education courses to maintain credentials.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years of current ICD-10 and CPT outpatient coding experience required.
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), CIRCC, or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Understanding of HIPAA.
  • Commitment to policies and procedures.
  • Stay up to date with continuing education.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Experience with encoder, computer-assisted coding, and EMR software.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Critical thinking skills for interpreting provider documentation.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to sit for long periods.
  • Capable of working remotely with minimal supervision.
