Job Description

Role: Trainee Occupational Health Advisor

Location: Kitt Green, Wigan UK

Salary: £38500 per annum + up to 20% bonus

Working hours: Monday–Friday 8:00–4:30pm

Purpose of role:

We are seeking a proactive and motivated Trainee Occupational Health Advisor to support our on-site Occupational Health team. This exciting development role provides a unique opportunity to begin a career in Occupational Health – a specialist area focused on the critical relationship between work, health, and the working environment.

The Trainee OH Advisor will play a key role in preventing work-related illness and injury by supporting the delivery of clinical advice and recommendations to the company. Reporting to the Occupational Health Manager, this position will help facilitate the health surveillance programme and support various health and wellbeing initiatives while developing the skills and experience needed to become an independent OH practitioner.

What\’ll you be doing:

  • Assist with implementing and running the health surveillance programme in line with HSE guidelines including COSHH, Control of Noise at Work Regulations (2005), and Control of Vibration at Work Regulations (2005), ensuring clinical standards are met;
  • Review and action health surveillance and fit-for-task escalations, providing advice on fitness to work;
  • Complete pre-placement health assessments for new starters, providing advice and actionable recommendations to line managers and HR;
  • With support, develop case management skills and begin managing your own caseload over time;
  • Work alongside the Occupational Health Manager to understand and contribute to OH policies and procedures in line with legislation and HSE best practice;
  • Develop skills to support management with individual risk assessments and workplace assessments where a health concern has been identified;
  • Support the development of the site’s Mental Health and Wellbeing strategy;
  • Proactively contribute to wellbeing initiatives across the organisation;
  • Deliver presentations and training sessions to promote health and wellbeing;
  • Participate in departmental audits;
  • Attend regular meetings with HR and Operational Managers to provide updates on OH activities and employee health.

What you\’ll have:

  • NMC Level One registration;
  • Experience working in Occupational Health;
  • Training and experience in completing Health Surveillance assessments;
  • Ability to build strong, proactive relationships with Operations Management, HR, Health and Safety, the Senior Leadership Team, and employees;
  • A willingness to support Union colleagues in understanding the role and purpose of Occupational Health;
  • Commitment to completing the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM) Diploma in Occupational Health Practice (company-funded, post-probation).
