Contract type: Permanent

Interview dates: w/c 08 September 2025

The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.

We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

These challenges need the bold science we support, but they won't be solved by science alone.

We are looking for a Senior Research Manager to join our team.

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

You will be joining the Therapeutics team within the wider Vector Control and Therapeutics team reporting to the Research Lead, Vector Control & Therapeutics. This is a multidisciplinary collaborative and enthusiastic team focused on supporting science to bring innovative solutions to combat infectious disease in the most affected communities.

It is an exciting time to join Wellcome under the direction of our new CEO John-Arne Rottingen who joined in 2024. The Infectious Disease Solutions Programme (IDSP) is a relatively new team and as such this is an opportune time to join and help us drive forward our strategy. The team focuses on two key drivers of infectious disease environmental change and antimicrobial resistance. We take a holistic approach combining an interest in gaining a better understanding of these drivers to accelerate the development and use of interventions. Our current focus is on vector borne disease, cholera, TB, fungal infections and bacterial AMR, to deliver solutions for communities most affected and low resource settings.

What will I be doing?

We are looking for a Senior Research Manager who will contribute to the leadership, development and delivery of the Vector Control and Therapeutics teams strategic objectives, with a focus on Therapeutics. You will support the team to select and advance the best research by funding, convening and sharing learnings in line with the Infectious Disease strategy.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide oversight to projects in fungal infections, bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and tuberculosis (TB) research portfolios, both in the development and management of projects. This includes contributing to the effective delivery of funding decisions, providing critical scientific assessment of applications, participating in decision-making reviews, making clear recommendations to senior management, and managing ongoing projects, escalating issues as appropriate.

  • Ensure a breadth and depth of knowledge of your area and the wider research and funding landscape and apply this to work collaboratively across the Infectious Disease Solutions Programme (IDSP) team and the Wellcome Trust to address gaps in global health.

  • Contribute importantly to the strategic direction of the Vector Control & Therapeutics team.

  • Support projects and strategies aimed at understanding and combating infectious diseases in Africa and Southeast Asia.

Is this job for me?

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • An advanced degree in the life sciences (e.g. medicinal chemistry, infectious disease drug development, or other infectious disease relevant degree) or equivalent demonstrable experience.

  • Significant expertise in Infectious Disease research related to therapeutic R&D or an understanding of interdisciplinary areas that contribute to drug discovery and development for anti-infectives (e.g. small molecule R&D, clinical research, fundamental research, AI in drug discovery, research uptake). This experience should have been gained through work in academia, and/or industry settings.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and be adept at influencing internal and external stakeholders and delivering impactful presentations, reports or articles.

  • Ability to handle competing priorities with high organizational skills.

  • Experience in research project management and grant administration.

  • The ability to contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.
