The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join us at a pivotal time. We are launching a new Aerospace Engineering degree, homed within School of Engineering, the programme builds on the School’s established strengths in fluid dynamics, materials, intelligent sensing, advanced manufacturing and electrical power systems and will be delivered from the new £110 million Stephenson Building in the heart of Newcastle.

We are a world class research-intensive university, delivering teaching and learning of the highest quality and playing a major role in the economic, social and cultural development of the North East of England. Our research community works across disciplines to tackle global challenges in sustainable energy, transport, and advanced manufacturing.

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Experimental Aerodynamics. This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the leading Engineering Schools in the UK.

The successful candidate will join a leading team of experts in Fluid Dynamics and Thermal Systems that specialises in cutting edge Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and modelling. The research strength of the Group lies in the high-fidelity CFD simulations and modelling of turbulent reacting and multiphase flows relevant to energy-efficient and environment-friendly power generation and propulsion, manufacturing and bioengineering applications.. This research supports the School’s strong track record of national and international research collaborations, with strategic partnerships in key areas tackling global challenges in sustainable energy, transport, and advanced manufacturing. We are keen to reinforce the Fluid Dynamics and Thermal Systems research group to build experimental expertise in aerodynamics to complement the existing expertise in computational modelling.

We particularly welcome applicants whose work contributes to the future of sustainable aviation and who bring experimental expertise in aerodynamics, propulsion and thermofluid systems for aircraft/spacecraft.

Key Accountabilities

  • Conduct internationally excellent research in experimental fluid dynamics, preferrably aerodynamics, publishing high-quality outputs and demonstrating impact
  • Secure funding from UKRI, EU, and industrial partners to support research activities
  • Deliver high-quality teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, developing innovative teaching materials
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student projects, as well as PhD students
  • Contribute to curriculum development, particularly in areas related to aerodynamics and experimental methods for fluid flows
  • Collaborate interdisciplinarily within the University and with external partners to enhance the impact of research
  • Participate in academic leadership and management activities within the School
  • Engage in knowledge exchange and public engagement, working with industry, government, and the wider public
  • Represent the discipline on relevant School, Faculty, or University committees/groups

The Person

Knowledge, Skills And Experience

All levels

  • Demonstrable subject knowledge in experimental fluid dynamics with experience of aerospace systems
  • Experience in wind tunnel measurements and other relevant experimental measurement techniques (for example PIV, LDV/LDA, Hot wire anemometry, etc.)
  • Track record of high-quality research at an international level, demonstrated through:
  • High-impact publications in leading experimental fluid dynamics and engineering journals
  • Conference presentations and invited talks
  • Clear research vision with potential for significant future contributions
  • Experience in teaching or assessment at undergraduate or postgraduate levels
  • Ability to collaborate with academic, industrial, and international partners
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with experience in delivering effective learning materials
  • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills, balancing teaching, research, and administration

In addition, for Grade G lecturers

  • Evidence of securing research funding or clear potential to do so
  • Research impact aligned with career stage and experience
  • Expected to hold a HEA Fellowship with a proven track record of teaching and assessment
  • Experience in technology-enhanced learning and laboratory-based teaching

In addition, for Senior Lecturer level

  • Strong track record of attracting significant research funding
  • Leading national and international collaborative research
  • High-profile publications and invited talks at major thermofluid dynamics conferences
  • Leadership in curriculum development and programme innovation
  • Experience in mentoring junior colleagues and supervising PhD students
  • Evidence of taking on senior leadership roles within an academic unit

  • Membership of a relevant professional engineering institution
