This four-year PhD project will harness artificial intelligence and high-resolution digital pathology to revolutionise how we evaluate healing in burn wounds. Using SlideScanner microscopy and advanced machine learning, you will help build tools that go beyond surface inspection — identifying tissue characteristics that define different grades of abnormality in wound healing.

Why this matters

Major burns can change lives forever — leaving behind scarring, pain, and challenges to physical and mental health. While current clinical methods rely largely on visual assessments, these offer only superficial insights. Histopathology remains the gold standard but is time-intensive and limited. By digitising samples and applying AI, we aim to improve accuracy, speed, and clinical value in assessing wound recovery.

What we’re looking for

We are seeking a motivated candidate with strong analytical skills and a passion for applying computational methods to biomedical challenges. A background in biomedical sciences, computer science, bioinformatics, or a related field is ideal, though we welcome applicants from diverse disciplines who are ready to learn.

Tuition Fees (Home) £11,500 per year

(Overseas including EU) £29,500 per year

Project Costs £3,500 per year

Start Dates September 2025, January 2026, or April 2026

Duration 4 years (full-time)

Funding Applicants must be self-funded or secure external sponsorship
