Design & Estimating Manager
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Design & Estimating Manager to lead our in-house team of estimators and system designers within the business. This role combines technical oversight, team leadership, and process management to ensure the delivery of high-quality designs, tenders, and project support across all stages of the estimating and design lifecycle.
The Design & Estimating Manager will be responsible for day-to-day management, mentoring and developing the team, overseeing ongoing and new design activities, and ensuring consistent, compliant, and commercially viable solutions are produced. The Design & Estimating Manager will report to the Installation Director.
Responsibilities
Team Management & Leadership
Lead, manage and develop a team of estimators and system designers.
Carry out regular 1:1s, appraisals, and performance reviews.
Manage team workload, priorities, and capacity planning.
Promote collaboration and a culture of continuous improvement.
Identify training needs and deliver or arrange technical and personal development opportunities.
Design Oversight & Technical Support
Provide guidance and approvals for design and estimation outputs.
Review system designs for compliance with industry standards (e.g., BS5839, BS6266, PD6662, EN54).
Support the production of compliant, cost-effective, and technically sound solutions.
Provide design support throughout the project lifecycle from pre-sales to commissioning and handover.
Estimation & Commercial Awareness
Ensure all quotations and tenders are reviewed and validated before submission.
Work with the commercial and procurement teams to balance competitiveness with profitability.
Support pre-sales and tendering efforts for major or complex projects.
Process & Quality Control
Maintain and improve design standards, templates, and documentation.
Ensure adherence to company policies, health & safety regulations, and relevant legislation.
Support audits and quality assurance reviews as required.
Stakeholder Engagement
Liaise with internal departments (sales, projects, commissioning, service) to ensure seamless project handovers and design intent is preserved.
Engage with clients, consultants, and suppliers where needed to support design development or resolve issues.
Required Skills and Experience
Proven experience in the fire and security industry in a design/technical capacity.
Strong leadership and people management experience.
Proficiency with design software (e.g., AutoCAD, design calculators, MS Office).
Solid understanding of relevant standards (BS5839, BS EN50131, BS6266, etc.).
Good commercial and estimation acumen.
Strong communication, time management, and problem-solving skills.
Desirable
FIA, Tavcom, or equivalent fire/security system training certifications.
Experience with integration platforms (e.g., Lenel, Honeywell, Gallagher, C-Cure, Milestone).
Knowledge of BIM or digital design workflows.
Working hours are 08:30 to 17:00 with a 45 minute lunch break. Salary will be discussed at interview stage.
