The Role
We are delighted to be seeking a motivated individual to join our project, in the School of Computing at Newcastle. The aim of the project is to develop digital innovations for patient-centric microsampling. As part of the technical development, you will be working closely with a consortium of academic and industry partners across the Europe and US (including multinational pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer, Eli Lilly, and GSK) to ensure the delivery of data and digital solutions for collecting and analysing small-volume blood samples.
You will research and design advanced machine learning, AI and statistical methods to process and analyse data generated from microsampling, which may encompass concentrations of analytes, demographic information, among others.
You will be expected to take the lead on addressing the following project objectives:
- Engage with research and industrial partners and wider stakeholders to identify business needs, challenges and new opportunities for digital innovations in microsampling, and effectively translate them into actionable use cases.
- Develop responsible AI and statistical solutions tailored to the identified digital use cases, laying the foundation for future research and the broader adoption of microsampling.
- Implement methods to enhance the trustworthiness and robustness of analytical results and predictive outcomes for improved user acceptance.
We are seeking a passionate, highly motivated individual who has demonstrable communication skills and has the ability to produce high quality academic and experimental outputs under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI). You should have excellent interpersonal skills, with an aptitude for building meaningful working relationships with our internal and external stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities
- Understand and convey material of a specialist or highly technical nature to the team or group of people through presentations and discussions that leads to the presentation of research papers in conferences and publications.
- Prepare and deliver presentations on research outputs/activities to audiences which may include: research sponsors, academic and non-academic audiences.
- Publish high quality outputs, including papers for submission to peer reviewed journals and papers for presentation at conferences and workshops under the direction of the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder
- Assist with the development of research objectives and proposals.
- Conduct individual and collaborative research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder.
- Work with the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder and other colleagues in the research group, as appropriate, to identify areas for research, develop new research methods and extend the research portfolio.
- Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines by discussing with the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder and offering creative or innovative solutions.
- Liaise with research colleagues and make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships for future research collaboration.
- Plan and manage own research activity, research resources in collaboration with others and contribute to the planning of research projects
- Deliver training in research techniques/approaches to peers, visitors and students as appropriate.
- Be involved in student supervision, as appropriate, and assist with the assessment of the knowledge of students.
- Contribute to fostering a collegial and respectful working environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect.
- Engage in wider citizenship to support the department and wider discipline.
- Engage in continuing professional development by participation in the undergraduate or postgraduate teaching programmes or by membership of departmental committees, etc. and by attending relevant training and development courses.
You will be working on a research project which will be led by another colleague. Whilst this means that you will not be carrying out independent research in your own right, the expectation is that you will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of your own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.
The Person
Essential:
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Evidence of being able to conduct high-quality research in one or more areas of Data Science, AI, Machine Learning, Health Informatics, and Digital Health.
- Publication record in peer-reviewed journals, commensurate with stage of career.
- A track record of presenting research at conferences, symposia, or meetings, commensurate with stage of career.
- Good programming skills in Python, R, Java, or Matlab.
Desirable:
- Experience of research in analysing healthcare data (e.g. EHRs).
- Evidence of collaboration with industries, policy makers, or institutions.
- Demonstrable ability to develop research proposals and designs in collaboration with other academics or industry partners.
- Experience with software delivery to a research sponsor.

Qualifications
Essential:
- A PhD awarded (or nearing completion) in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics/Statistics or a closely related subject.
