About the Unit

The Traffic Investigation Unit is part of the Criminal Justice Services department and is responsible for the Road Traffic Collision Administration and Investigation, as well as Disclosure & Postal Requisitions. It is based at West Midlands Police Headquarters, Lloyd House, Birmingham.

Responsibilities

  • Support the RTC team in the investigation and case management of all damage‑only, slight injury and serious injury road traffic collisions, allegations of driving standards and police accidents.
  • Input postal requisitions and disclose third‑party material such as police reports.
  • Provide administrative support to the unit, managing public and third‑party contact via telephone and e‑mail.
  • Administer and manage collisions reported via Self‑Reporting Form (SRF), National Collision Reporting Form (NCRF) and the CRASH App, using the National Collision Recording and Sharing system (CRASH).
  • Administer education courses, fixed penalties or postal charges as appropriate.
  • Liaise with local CMU regarding court process and ongoing cases.
  • Manage archiving and filing in line with MOPI/Information Services guidelines.
  • Review and act on solicitors’ and insurance companies’ letters, preparing extracts/reports whilst adhering to GDPR.
  • Provide information, advice and guidance to internal and external customers via telephone, e‑mail and writing.
  • Monitor relevant team email accounts.
  • Input postal requisitions for the Single Justice Procedure or Police‑Led prosecution court.
  • Liaise with external partners such as insurance companies, solicitors, magistrates court, education providers and the public.
  • Update IP/Witnesses/Offenders with progress of cases in accordance with contact counts and the victims code of conduct.
  • Attend court to provide evidence in relation to the administration process.
  • Create and dispatch relevant correspondence as required.
  • Adapt to the needs of the unit and attend meetings to improve performance through metrics.
  • Carry out any other duties commensurate with the purpose and grading of the post.

Essential Skills

  • Experience of entering and inputting data onto information systems with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to communicate clearly and concisely with a diverse range of people; written communication is clear, logical and focused.
  • Administrative experience, able to multi‑task and deliver a quality service to customers.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and communicate professionally with a wide range of individuals.

Desirable Skills

  • Previous knowledge or experience working within a Criminal Justice Unit.
  • Experience working within a road traffic environment.

Working Hours & Location

36.5 hours a week, Monday to Friday, at Lloyd House, Birmingham.

Vetting and Medical

The successful applicant must pass Recruitment Vetting, Counter‑Terrorism Clearance, background & financial disclosure, and medical checks including possibly a drug test and fitness test.
