Job Opportunity: Head of Democratic Services

Good Afternoon,

I am currently representing Slough Council, which is offering an initial temporary contract for 3-6 months, with the possibility of extension or a permanent position for the right candidate. The salary is negotiable depending on experience.

The role is based at: SL1 2EJ with a hybrid working arrangement.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Lead, organise, develop, and motivate employees within assigned service areas.
2. Manage performance, appraisals, training, recruitment, discipline, grievance, and absence management.
3. Contribute proactively to business and annual planning, ensuring clear performance indicators and targets to meet strategy and customer expectations.
4. Ensure service provision aligns with organisational procedures and guidelines.
5. Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers to deliver high-quality services.
6. Determine cost-effective resource deployment to meet service objectives, ensuring statutory and financial compliance, performance management, and risk minimisation.
7. Plan and deliver work programmes within your area to ensure quality and compliance with technical and statutory requirements.

Candidate Requirements:

1. Proven senior management experience in a large, complex, multi-service organisation, managing technical or professional teams, with a passion for continuous learning.
2. Experience in leading and managing significant organisational change, with evidence of delivering tangible benefits, including implementing new structures, systems, or flexible working methods.
3. Management qualification, ideally degree level plus postgraduate qualification (e.g., ILM7/MBA) or vocational equivalent.
