Overview

An opportunity has arisen in our Trust for an assistant psychologist wishing to work with children and young people (CYP) within a community paediatric setting. This is an exciting opportunity to join an expanding multidisciplinary team. You would be supporting the clinical activities of the community paediatrics clinical psychology service, which provides care and treatment for younger CYP and their families presenting with neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD and autism. There would be the opportunity for interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary working, and you would receive weekly supervision from a Principal Clinical Psychologist. Assistant psychologists are an integral member of the MDT, and you will have substantial opportunities to develop your knowledge and expertise of child development, direct clinical contact with families, and observation skills. As part of our commitment to your CPD, we will also support you to connect with clinical psychologists working in other clinical areas within the trust, to increase your knowledge and understanding of the breadth of roles clinical psychologists work in.

Main duties

  • Contribute to the community paediatric clinical psychology service, as appropriate and under the supervision of the principal clinical psychologist. To include supporting multi-disciplinary assessment pathways
  • Assist in the development and implementation of research and ethics protocols and projects, and draft papers for publication in peer reviewed journals as required
  • Support the department with regular audit and service evaluation activities as directed by the principal clinical psychologists
  • Maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping and report writing in accordance with the professional codes of practice of the British Psychological Society and Trust policies and procedures

Person Specification

Education, Qualifications and Training

  • Essential: An upper second class honours degree or higher in psychology which provides a graduate basis for registration of the British Psychological Society.
  • Must hold a full UK driving licence and have access to vehicle for use during work hours

Desirable

  • Post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis.

Experience

  • Essential: Experience of working to a demanding schedule and capable of completing and finishing tasks.
  • Experience of working with children and young people.
  • Experience of undertaking observational work with children and young people

Desirable

  • Experience of working previously as an Assistant Psychologist would be desirable.
  • Experience of completing childhood cognitive assessments and/or other standardised assessments (e.g. WISC)

Skills, Ability, Knowledge

  • Essential: High level communication skills (written and verbal), including ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive.
  • Capable of working productively as a team member and ability to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines.
  • Ability to communicate sensitive information to patients and carers.
  • Understanding of the needs and difficulties of children, young people and their families living with health conditions
  • Understanding of psychology applied to healthcare and desire to explore a career in clinical psychology.
  • Ability to work independently, reliably and consistently.
  • Be able to accept and use supervision appropriately and effectively.
  • Knowledge of computer statistical packages and word processing including knowledge of Excel, Access and SPSS a positive advantage
