The Data Tribe is responsible for driving Admiral’s data strategy. We efficiently deliver data pipelines, reports, and analytical capabilities, harnessing innovative techniques and the latest technologies. Our mission is to give more autonomy to our end users in the Business, effectively unlocking insights and driving the success of the company.

The Senior Data Engineer will ensure that data solutions are designed and delivered to meet the functional and non-functional demands of the Business and customer. The Senior Data Engineer will be part of a team made up of mixed capabilities, and they should be comfortable working independently as well as part of this diverse team to deliver a shared goal, as well as being the technical expert within the teams. We aim to create an inclusive and safe environment for Engineers to pursue their own ideas, make their own decisions and empower them to implement and explore them. The role requires the Senior Data Engineer to support what they develop and maybe expected to cover out of hours on-call.

The applicant will lead a team of Engineers working with a graph database for various use cases. They should be adept at designing, evaluating, and building different ingestion methods based on requirements, as well as optimising data and infrastructure for both transactional and analytical uses. They will need to understand how to implement common uses of graph technology such as entity resolution and fraud detection.

Main Duties

  • Leading solutions for evaluating and comprehending data and information from diverse sources and driving the production of innovative, high-quality implementations to problems that meet Business requirements and drive forward the department strategy.
  • Ensuring and complying with engineering, design and testing standards and practices, and with Admiral IT governance and architectural standards while performing in a heavily regulated environment.
  • Driving and acting on core engineering principles and values (accountability, transparency, consistency, quality, re-usability and an automate where possible attitude).
  • Coaching and empowering colleagues and providing knowledge transfer to the team.
  • Actively participating in Squad, Chapter and Guild ceremonies and activities.
  • Working as part of a team, being a supportive team memberwith a positive attitude, engaging with and contributing to company culture and team spirit.
  • Collaboration with all levels of seniority across IT and the wider business.
  • Being proactive and a self-learner, experimenting and learning from failure, and applying and sharing technical expertise at every opportunity.

Essential

  • Expert level experience with programming languages such as ANSI SQL, GQL, Python or equivalents.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of automation, data development tools and technologies such as: BigQuery, DataFlow, Cloud Composer, Cloud Functions, Neo4j, Azure DevOps.
  • Expertise in modern Cloud Engineering utilising Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience with design, development and testing of data pipelines writing to relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Knowledge and experience in Scrum development practices, using associated tools for testing and continuous integration & deployment.

Desirable

  • Expertise in monitoring and optimising queries for performance evaluation.
  • Knowledge of graph databases including data modelling, database concepts (indexes, constraints, etc), ingestion methods.
