The Smart Hands Break Fix Engineer is required to work within a team of engineers carrying out network equipment break fix and ICT cabling infrastructure support at a client site – based in Camberley for most of your time, but on occasion may provide cover on other sites including Slough, Welwyn Garden City, Bromley, and Central London locations. Therefore, a car is required and travel to these sites would be expensed.
The work will include all types of patching, break fix, circuit provision and recovery, disconnect/reconnect of desktop and networking equipment, rack and stack of data center hardware, and provision of connectivity to data center hardware. The position will be site-based as required and reports to the Service Delivery Manager.
You will be part of a team delivering support services on a 24x7x365 shift basis and will be required to work as part of a shift pattern and receive a shift allowance.
What you’ll be doing as our Smart Hands Break Fix Field Engineer:
- Installation of equipment racks within technology rooms.
- Racking of servers and other network hardware equipment.
- Installation of power distribution units within equipment racks.
- Restack of equipment within existing technology rooms.
- Movement of equipment within site locations including stores.
- Perform technology component swaps.
- Decommission of equipment within technology rooms.
- Un-racking of servers and other network hardware equipment.
- Decommission of power distribution units within equipment racks.
- Removal of redundant infrastructure (empty cabinets, powered-off devices, redundant cabling, etc.) from technology rooms and workspaces.
- Audit and document desktop configuration, including patching and power, for existing and proposed user locations.
- Power down and disconnect desktop equipment including any peripherals, ensuring all are identified and labelled correctly ready for reconnection.
- Relocate and install desktop equipment and peripherals.
- Configure, install, and test analogue, digital, and VOIP telephone handsets; provide headset support as required.
- Connect network patching to servers and other equipment within racks.
- Carry out DBAN disk wipes using software.
- Interface with Corporate Real Estate on mechanical and electrical provisioning.
- Escort and supervise activities within technology rooms (e.g., third party and client staff).
- Technology room inspections.
- Assist with BMS alarm investigations.
- Review and assign work orders.
- Manage materials, tools, and test equipment.
- Carry out surveys and update drawings and schedules.
- Update records for all changes using asset management software when required.
- Provide third-party supervision (escort and monitoring).
- Deliver first-line support (e.g., reboots on instruction, identification of lights & connections).
- Represent site on incident bridges.
- Perform technology component swaps.
- Administer RMAs for faulty equipment.
- Support power circuits (e.g., sub-distribution in racks).
- Provide temperature control support (e.g., temporary fixes and liaison with Corporate Real Estate).
- Support structured and patch cabling faults.
- Provide supervision and quality assurance for cabling installations.
- Carry out all types of copper (voice and data) cabling installations, including termination and testing in line with client standards.
- Install earth cables, cabinets, and racks.
- Install cable containment systems.
- Audit and document existing cabling installations.
- Perform cable tracing activities.
- Manage patching within equipment cabinets.
- Compile patching schedules.
- Use IIM/CMS software for patching planning.
- Label cabling and hardware (patch panels, outlets, etc.) to client standards.
- Perform testing and fault finding on copper and fibre cabling infrastructure (including ISDN line tests) using modern testers.
- Update/edit records in asset management systems.
- Track daily activities, task completion, and incident/project status.
- Manage third-party vendors to ensure compliance with change control, specifications, and quality standards.
- Manage change control processes.
- Participate in incident resolution management.
What we’re looking for in our Smart Hands Break Fix Field Engineer
- Relevant experience working in a banking IT environment.
- Experience in ICT hardware break fix and MACs (moves, adds, and changes) in workplace/office and data centre facilities.
- Experience in structured cabling installation, fault finding, and testing using Fluke test equipment.
- Strong understanding of structured cabling standards and cable types (FTP, UTP & Optical Fibre).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word).
- Self-starter with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong multitasking and prioritization skills.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Expertise in asset management and ticketing systems.
- In-depth knowledge of change management and service delivery processes.
- Ability to mentor and train new team members.
- Ability to approve and sign off training modules.
- Capability to lead shift activities and manage special projects end-to-end.
- Ability to cover line management responsibilities when needed.
- Satisfactory skills matrix score.
- Flexibility to work an alternating shift pattern.
- Must have own vehicle and a valid UK driver’s license.
Preferred but not essential:
- Formal training or qualifications in Information Technology.
- Experience with Intelligent Infrastructure Management (IIM).
- COMPTIA A+, Network+, Server+ certifications.
