For more than 70 years, Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, has built exceptional aluminum and steel commercial vessels. Located on the Taunton River in Somerset, MA, the family-owned and operated shipyard counts more than 440 vessels built as proof of its longevity and vessel reliability. The Gladding-Hearn brand is synonymous with pilot boats, with more launches operating in the United States than any other shipyard. Gladding-Hearn’s capabilities also include construction of high-speed catamaran passenger ferries, fire and police/patrol boats, port security vessels, research boats, tugs, and wind-farm support vessels.

Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding is seeking to hire a Marine Engineer. This is a full-time position, located in Somerset, MA.

GENERAL DUTIES:
Design and oversee construction, modification, and repair of aluminum and steel commercial vessels such as pilot and patrol boats, hi-speed ferries, etc. utilizing the required computer programs noted below. Candidate must be a team player, have good communication skills and work well with others to resolve any design or production issues.

Required Computer Skills: Must be proficient in Outlook, Excel, Word, Autocad, Rhino or Solidworks programs. Knowledge of Kubotek Key Creator is a plus.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
• Design and oversee construction, modification, and repair of marine craft and floating structures, such as ships, barges, tugs, work boats, etc.

• Design, integrate and detail propulsion, steering, piping and electrical systems as well as interior outfit and joinery into vessels.

• Study design proposals and specifications.

• Assist with Stability Tests, Inclining tests for a variety of vessels.

• Assist with sea trials

• Provide Lead Engineer support on projects.

• Provide liaison and support for projects in Shipyard.

• Interface with customers and vendors as needed to support the design, engineering and production processes.

• Help create new and refine existing in-house design and production standards.

• Manage and facilitate interaction with Marine Regulatory Agencies such as USCG, ABS, Lloyds, DNV, etc.

• Lead or assist with special projects as needed.

• Assist as needed in processing warranty and/or customer service calls.

• Assist with developing proposals and estimates as requested.

• Travel may be required.

Work areas will include outside in conditions of both hot and cold temperatures as well as inside in an office environment. May be exposed to odors, dust, dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels and potentially hazardous equipment typically found in Shipyards and onboard vessels. Must be able to crouch and stoop to get into areas with restricted headroom and climb ladders. Must be able to sit and read technical documents and look at computer monitors for extended periods. Ability to travel and work long hours if necessary, including weekends. Must comply with all work rules, including those that pertain to safety and health.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION:
Engineering Degree or equivalent with a minimum of 5 to 7 years’ experience as a marine engineer. Professional Engineer license is a plus. Experience with structural and system’s design in the marine environment, including steering, piping and electrical systems. Must have experience in USCG Subchapter K and T Regulations, experience with class society rules such as ABS and DNV or Lloyds.

This position requires access to controlled technology. To abide by Export Compliance (ITAR) regulations, candidates must have either US Citizenship or US Permanent Resident Alien Status.

Gladding Hearn Shipbuilding will only employ those who are legally authorized to work. Any offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment physical and drug and alcohol screening. Random drug testing conducted throughout employment.
