RPS has an exciting opportunity for a Utility Surveyor to join our Geospatial team. In this dynamic, field‑based role, you’ll work both independently and as part of a collaborative team on projects that range from routine to highly complex. You’ll utilize state‑of‑the‑art equipment to support the delivery of precise field data for Underground Utility Mapping, Drainage Surveys, and various other advanced surveying services.

About the Team

The RPS Asset, Surveying, and Inspection (AS&I) team provides industry‑leading services to the UK Water Industry. Our employees support Water Networks, Drainage, Surveying, Leakage Consultancy, Water Resources and Efficiency. The team analyses complex data and provides pragmatic solutions, reducing water leakage and preventing flooding and pollution in local communities.

About You

As a key member of the AS&I business, your role as Utility Surveyor is critical to our strategic priorities – to deliver excellent customer service and execute complex operational tasks. Whether you are just starting out or taking the next step in your career, this position offers an opportunity to progress with RPS.

You will need to work flexibly, working weekends, evenings and overtime if required. Be willing to travel to different locations. It is essential that you enjoy working outdoors, as you will most of the time be outside in all weather.

Your Responsibilities

  • Lead and support survey projects, ensuring timely delivery within scope.
  • Collaborate with Senior Surveyors and Survey Managers.
  • Follow technical guidelines to produce quality‑controlled survey deliverables.
  • Adhere to safe working practices in various environments.
  • Execute supervised and unsupervised work, following risk assessments.
  • Engage with the public, team members, and clients.
  • Identify and elevate operational, safety, and commercial risks.
  • Comply with company procedures, including safe driving practices.
  • Ensure compliance with quality standards.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Expertise in PAS128 standards.
  • Proficiency in using surveying equipment (Electromagnetic, Ground Penetrating Radar) and software (AutoCAD, Microsoft Office).
  • Strong written and verbal English skills.
  • A proactive, problem‑solving approach with a willingness to learn.
  • Willingness to undergo regular drug and alcohol testing. Flexibility in working hours and good time management.

Qualifications

  • QCF Level 3 in Utility Mapping/Surveying or relevant HNC/Diploma, or proven experience.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Health and Safety

  • Moving heavy items including inspection chamber covers.
  • Working in all weather conditions (including night work).
  • Possible work in confined spaces and on highways.
  • Mandatory drug and alcohol tests and DBS check required.
