Overview

Specialist Biomedical Scientist – Biochemistry (Band 6). Ipswich Hospital is looking for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Biochemistry to join a UKAS compliant hospital laboratory. A completed Specialist Portfolio in Biochemistry is required; a candidate with at least 80% completion will be considered for a Band 5 developmental post. The department is committed to training and development with a Biochemistry training lead to assist with CPD and career progression.

The Biochemistry service is the hub lab for ESNEFT, conducting a wide range of tests including an automation section, non-mech and electrophoresis, using a fully automated ROCHE system. When competent, staff may participate in an out-of-hours roster with night rate enhancement for lone working. Our vision is to deliver high-quality, fully compliant services focused on customers and clinical care.

You will play an integral role in training junior staff.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the quality management system and UKAS accreditation.
  • Train less experienced staff and validate/authorize results to provide a safe, high-quality service for patients.
  • Mentor junior staff and support their development; act as shift lead to run the laboratory and be flexible to work out of hours to deliver a 24/7 service.
  • Work independently and lead the specialist Biochemistry area as directed by the Lead Biomedical Scientist.
  • Handle human body fluids, tissues and hazardous chemicals in the course of the work.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • 2 weeks ago posting indicates current vacancy; candidates must have a completed Specialist Portfolio in Biochemistry (80% acceptable for Band 5 development).
  • Experience in a hospital laboratory environment preferred; ability to train and develop others.
  • Flexibility to work out of hours as part of the on-call roster.
  • Clinical governance and quality accreditation experience desired.
