We have a brand new opportunity at our Cardiff Juice Centre of Excellence for a Controls Engineer to join the team. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager with on‑shift direction from the Engineering Team Leader, the role provides plant support on integrated solutions, supporting the Princes Process Control and IT architecture model. The role covers the practices involved in the wider Group strategy for delivering Automation Control & Instrumentation solutions to the Cardiff site, and will involve integrating and maintaining key industrial components such as sensors, valves, process control systems and industrial PCs.
Responsibilities
- Provide breakdown support to manufacturing operations for PLC control related issues.
- Develop, maintain and administer all aspects of the electrical process control systems infrastructure and instrumentation.
- Maintain site PLC, HMI, SCADA, Historian software systems and other programmable devices.
- Act as a site competent person (C2) for electrical systems, guiding and supporting all departments.
- Ensure 100% uptime of systems and infrastructure, eliminating breakdowns resulting from electrical control systems.
- Carry out relevant planned preventive maintenance (PPM) on electrical systems.
- Conduct risk assessments, attend Process Hazard Analysis studies (HAZOPs), perform LOPA assessments and execute Cause & Effect safety system validation testing.
- Administer process control communication networks (Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Modbus, Profibus) and manage configuration changes (operating system versions, network parameters, router settings).
- Serve as a competent person for Process Control & Instrumentation Engineering, developing user requirement specifications for new and modified control and instrumentation systems.
- Train and support cross‑functional teams to build site capabilities.
- Support engineering shutdowns and weekly improvement meetings, and establish/test rigs and environments for new solutions.
- Maintain product Food Safety, Legality, Integrity, Authenticity and Quality standards by ensuring all associated policies and procedures are followed.
- Uphold safety, environmental, quality and hygiene requirements, including legislative compliance and a culture of safe behaviour.
- Support and enhance behavioural awareness to reduce accidents, incidents and near‑misses.
- Work closely with site operational teams and collaborate cross‑functionally to deliver full support for deployed systems.
- Support the engineering team in delivering tasks safely and effectively, challenging work practices and processes to improve operational performance.
- Develop a culture of ownership within the team for ongoing development.

Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of SAP, MES, Wonderware.
- Knowledge of PLCs, instrumentation and drives – preferably Siemens systems.
- Ability to modify and test PLC and control systems.
- Knowledge of IT architectures for relevant plant industrial networks.
- Experience on low voltage and extra low voltage systems.
