Business Analyst

Our tech teams don’t just keep Northern running, they help shape where we’re heading. As a Business Analyst, you’ll sit right at the centre of that change, translating big ideas into practical improvements that make everyday work smoother for teams across the business.

This role isn’t just about processes and systems – it’s about people. You’ll be building strong relationships across departments, making sure technology solutions are shaped around real needs. It’s an opportunity to be part of a new and growing team, with the freedom to bring fresh thinking and help define how business analysis is done at Northern.

This is a 6-month fixed term contract, ideal if you’re looking to bring your expertise into a team where your insights can make an immediate and lasting impact.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Working closely with stakeholders to understand challenges and shape requirements for new solutions.
  • Mapping out complex business processes and identifying opportunities to improve the way we do things.
  • Defining functional and non-functional requirements and making sure they align with wider business objectives.
  • Supporting early-stage project activity, including detailed business cases and costed solution options.
  • Helping present ideas to the Northern Technology Design Authority to ensure they meet standards and make sense for the business.
  • Playing a hands-on role throughout the project lifecycle, guiding delivery teams and checking back with stakeholders as plans evolve.

About You

You’ll be someone who sees the bigger picture, but isn’t afraid to dive into the detail. A confident communicator, you know how to turn technical language into something everyone understands – and how to get people behind your ideas.

Here are three things you’ll bring:

  • Experience in a business analysis role, ideally within large or complex organisations.
  • A natural ability to solve problems and spot opportunities for smarter ways of working.
  • Great organisational skills and the confidence to influence colleagues at all levels.

You’ll also need:

  • A degree or A-level equivalent education.
  • A recognised business analysis qualification (BCS or IIBA), or solid experience that shows your capability

What’s in it for you?

At Northern, we don’t just value our people – we go the extra mile to support them. Here’s a taste of what you can look forward to:

  • Generous Pension Scheme: We top up your contributions by 1.5 times.

Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe – and this year, we’re celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.

At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B – we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We\’re also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview.

We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.

No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob… there’s a place for you here in the railway.
