Scopely is looking for a Game Server Engineer focused on core server technology to join our team for a new, truly unique multiplayer strategy game, located in Ireland, Spain, Portugal, or the UK on a hybrid/remote basis. We support visa sponsorship and relocation assistance.

We are in the early stages of an ambitious, unannounced Strategy/MMO title and are building a team of passionate game developers. We seek a Principal Server Engineer to help shape the future of our MMO game server architecture.

What You Will Do

  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs in Python on AWS.
  • Support MMORTS game services for millions of daily players.
  • Plan and develop server core technologies for new gameplay features.
  • Implement features collaboratively, understanding requirements and technical solutions.
  • Optimize server cluster performance and propose improvements.
  • Analyze player behaviors and enhance server security to prevent cheating and malicious activities.
  • Work with QA to resolve bugs and ensure high-quality code.
  • Deploy and monitor applications in cloud environments like AWS.
  • Keep up with industry trends, especially in Python, Redis, AWS, and gaming.

What We’re Looking For

  • Extensive experience in developing highly available backend systems for large-scale MMO or high-traffic web applications.
  • Proficiency with Python, web frameworks (e.g., Flask, FastAPI), and async programming principles.
  • Experience with Redis, RESTful API design, Linux, Docker, MySQL or similar databases.
  • Knowledge of security measures against intrusions, injections, and cheating.
  • Experience with version control, deployment, CI/CD, and automated testing.
  • Understanding of stateful and stateless game server architectures.

Bonus Points

  • Familiarity with messaging systems (RabbitMQ, AWS SQS, Redis Streams).
  • Experience with AWS services (EC2, RDS, S3, IAM).
  • Knowledge of Infrastructure-as-Code, especially Terraform.
  • Understanding of network infrastructure and cloud networking (VPC, Load Balancing).
  • Experience with traffic analysis tools and log management (Datadog, Kibana).
