Job summary

This is a Trust appointment, and the first year will be rotational between RBH and HH with weekly rotation between two sites, whereas the second year will be at our 77 Wimpole Street, W1G 9RU London site. The post holder may also be required to work at any other of the Trust\’s sites and within the evolving collaboration with Kings Health Partners.

This 2-year fellowship is designed to give full knowledge and understanding of nuclear cardiology. Fellows will be encouraged to undertake specialty specific examinations and apply for ARSAC licence to practise nuclear cardiology, if eligible.

Post may close early if sufficient number of applicants have been received.

Main duties of the job

This clinical fellow postholder will be expected to rotate between RBH and HH in the first-year learning about nuclear cardiology, SPECT-CT, attending MDTs, supporting clinical service, conducting cardiac stress tests, preparing preliminary reports, and supporting the clinical team to run the service efficiently. It is expected that fellow will participate in departmental research, audit, and governance activities.

About us

The Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH) is a specialist cardiothoracic centre specialising in diseases of the heart and lung, with services for adults (Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Radiology, and Thoracic Medicine) and Paediatrics. It has approximately 2,081 staff, 296 beds, 6 operating theatres, 5 catheter laboratories, a private patients\’ ward and extensive imaging facilities. A state-of-the-art diagnostic and imaging centre opened in the autumn of 2021. The Hospital benefits from a joint cardiac and respiratory clinical research facility and has strong links both with King\’s College London/ King\’s Health Partners and the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College.

The nuclear medicine departments in RBH and HH and PET department at Wimpole Street is led by Dr Kshama Wechalekarsupported by Dr Pushan Bharadwaj, Dr Georgia Keramida and Dr Marta Gennaro as consultants who rotate between sites with a rotating clinical fellow. There is a team of medical physics experts led by Lucy Hossen who serve the needs of all 3 sites. The team of technologists, nurses and administrative staff is specific to each site.

  • The post holders primary role is totake responsibility for the care of patients within facility.
  • To lead advanced life support resuscitation in response to cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis, etc.
  • Supervising scanning lists, providing urgent/verbal preliminary reports after discussion with a consultant and teaching junior imaging trainees.
  • To perform pharmacological stress tests for cardiac imaging, especially for PET-CT.
  • To medically support in preparing patients for the most appropriate cardiac state for CTCA imaging.
  • Imaging assessment of PET and Nuclear medicine images
  • To be present and available for all scans involving the use of contrast media.
  • Participating in clinical and imaging meetings.
  • Abide by local rules of radiation protection under the direction of the RPS/RPA.
  • Participate in audit and be committed to improving patient care within this facility.
  • Actively support ongoing research projects with patient interviews and supervision of imaging in accordance with research study protocols.
  • To contribute to the development and standards of imaging techniques.
  • Ensuring that all patient records are complete and ready within the agreed timeframes.
  • Participate where necessary in-patient history taking, physical examination, appropriate investigation and rational prescribing.
  • Maintain good communication with Imaging Services Manager, General Manager and Clinical Directors where necessary.
  • The post holder will be expected to undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients and to contribute to the smooth running of the private facility.

    • To demonstrate politeness, courtesy, and sensitivity in dealing with patients/clients, visitors/relatives and colleagues, maintaining good customer relations, recognising their needs for alternative methods of communication.
    • Maintain effective channels of communication with members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure the smooth running of the department.
    • Being first contact for day-to-day medically clinical matters.
    • Participate when required in relevant and appropriate committees or consumer forums, which may be developed.

    6.3 Resource Management:

    Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to last-minute and urgent scanning requirements.

    To collaborate with the team to ensure effective use of resources and actively engage with rostering.

    Demonstrate a problem-solving approach and suggest potential solutions.

    6.4 Information Management:

    • Responsibility for compiling an accurate summary of patients reports in a timely manner.
    • Participate in the collection of audit and research data as required.
    • Use data which will contribute to the improvement of patient care.
    • Post holder will ensure safe importation and exportation of confidential image data.
    • Post holder will ensure the accurate recording of all clinical information recorded in the information management and picture archiving and communication systems used.
