You will be joining one of the largest Real Estate Investment Trusts (REIT) in the world, with significant growth ambitions for the UK and European markets, including moving into new offices at 3 St. James Square. From day one of this opportunity, with the support of our Head of UK Tax, you will be able to help create, shape and improve our UK tax operating platform, enabling you to broaden your skillsets; this will also bring dynamic opportunities for career growth as the company expands.
Position Overview:
The UK Tax Manager manages UK-related tax compliance and accounting, provides support on UK transactions and collaborates with senior company leaders and external advisors to implement tax-efficient growth of the group. The manager also supports the training and development needs of more junior team members.
Key Responsibilities:
Tax Compliance
- Manage all day-to-day UK tax compliance reporting requirements, including any offshore tax reporting requirements for the companies in the UK group.
- Support relationship management with HMRC, third-party external advisors, and internal and external company stakeholders (i.e., vendors/senior business leaders).
- Prepare or review all necessary tax documents and internal or external tax communications for sign-off and subsequent submission to the relevant tax authorities.
- Manage and track all ongoing UK group tax compliance requirements including presentation to the UK board and/or individual senior business leaders.
- Manage the ongoing tracking of REIT conditions including quarterly reporting to the Board.
- Identify efficiencies in the tax compliance process and manage implementation (where identified).
Tax Structuring/Planning
- Participate and support tax structuring and planning in the expansion and evolution of the UK group.
- Support and coordinate tax due diligence on UK transactions.
- Manage and implement all post-acquisition tax actions.
- Manage transfer pricing processes to ensure that advice is correctly implemented, adequately documented, and regularly monitored.
Other tasks
- Preparation and review of calculations for accounting purposes.
- Effectively manage multiple workstreams, whilst ensuring timely and effective delivery and strong communication to the wider team.
- Proactively expand their tax knowledge base to support the commercial needs of the business.
- Proactively manage and support the development and training of junior members of the tax team.
- Manage the implementation and adherence to any new tax initiatives that may apply to the company.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Organisational Relationships:
- Work across the tax department to facilitate the preparation of timely and accurate tax compliance.
- Work with Treasury to ensure tax payments are made in a correct and timely manner.
- Work with the legal department to prepare/provide tax forms related to company transactions.
- Communicate with other departments to obtain an understanding of transactions and to determine their applicable tax treatment.
- Work with third-party advisors to obtain relevant tax advice and help facilitate tax compliance.
Candidate Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must have for the role:
- Tax or accounting-related professional qualification required (i.e. ACA / CTA) or equivalent UK REIT Tax experience.
- Suitable UK tax management compliance experience (either CT or indirect) coming from an inhouse role or straight from practice.
- Strong UK tax technical background with tax compliance, research, and planning experience (to preferably include REIT, VAT, CIS, TP, and tax due-diligence experience, in addition to Corporate Tax).
- Ability to apply tax theory to relevant business scenarios and transactions.
- Strong communication skills, with an ability to explain tax concepts to non-tax professionals.
- An ability to organize and monitor tax performance according to agreed priorities.
- Able to demonstrate a positive attitude towards process change and improvement.
- Experience with training and development of more junior UK tax team members.
Desirable but not essential:
- Inhouse experience.
- Real estate, property or REIT experience.
- One Source and/or Alpha Tax system skills.
