Location: Motherwell, Scotland – Based at the Maxim Office with travel required to support substation projects across Argyll..
This is a hybrid role based at Maxim Park (Motherwell), with regular travel to key active sites in Argyll — including Crarae, An Suidhe, and Craig Murrail — and the flexibility to work from home in line with Balfour Beatty’s Smart Working policy.
Role Purpose
- Responsible for the financial management of a major, complex project(s) or a number of projects from inception, tendering, negotiating and agreeing contracts and then commercially delivering Projects often worth many tens of millions of pounds.
- Integral part of the project leadership team where they hold key responsibilities associated with the commercial and financial success of each project.
- Experienced individuals who have risen through the ranks of the industry and their role is broad and includes anything from risk management to procurement, financial reporting and managing the supply chain.
- Proven skills in commercial awareness, client liaison, project management and now developing team leadership. They will also have an extensive understanding of the construction industry, flexibility and a talent for negotiation.
- Demonstrate willingness and capability to managing and developing a commercial team and be themselves a Chartered Member or Fellow of the RICS, ICES or CIOB, and a mentor/role model to other commercial staff on their journey to becoming professionally qualified.
What you\’ll be doing
- Provides commercial input to Value Engineering reviews for different forms of construction.
- To support the review of tenders, including estimates, cost data and contract reviews.
- Commercial management of a large infrastructure project or a portfolio of smaller projects.
- Develop and directly manage a small team.
- Manage costs n relation to infrastructure projects with experience of identifying commercial risks and opportunities in respect of their works.
- Deliver varied commercial duties including responsibility for procuring and managing supply chain.
- Optimise commercial performance through diligent cost control and value for money opportunities, whilst achieving the require standards and quality for our customers.
- Create and maintain commercial relationships to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Contract administration with both client and subcontractors.
- Provide support and adherence for the end-to-end Gated Business Lifecycle process (Gates 1-8).
- Proactively drive career and personal development, including professional certification.

- Costs management and maximising value on a large project or portfolio of projects.
- Embedding a mindset within the team of financial and commercial control within a project(s).
- In-depth knowledge and experience of procuring and managing supply chain.
- Maintain a Personal Development Plan to ensure continuous personal and professional development.
- Already in possession of or working towards professional accreditation.
- Proactively develop, mentor and coach immediate members to ensure development of talent and succession within the team.
- Demonstration of working to deadlines including effective delegation, working efficiently and to a high standard.
- Excellent communication skills with all internal and external stakeholders.
- Keen interest and experience in infrastructure projects.
- Demonstration of resilience and determination to succeed (achievement focus).
- Proactively manage opportunities, risks and threats.
- Experience of NEC contracts.
