Job Description Summary

Become part of a winning team and help to deliver the Green Energy transition.

The North and South Europe Grid System Integration (GSI) team designs and delivers a wide range of high voltage AC and DC transmission projects, and is looking for a “Secondary Design – Verification and Validation” Engineer to join the team.

These large and complex projects have many design elements and requirements, and it is critical that all the design work undertaken fully takes into account the complete range of needs and delivers a design that meets its functional objectives.

As a “Secondary Design – Verification and Validation Engineer”, you will be responsible for reviewing the key elements of the light current systems design (Protection, control, automation, telecommunication, Metering etc) across a range of projects, and assessing whether it meets the required quality, safety, customer and regulatory standards, and fully satisfies the operational needs of the Customer. Should any area of concern be identified, you will work closely with, and advise the design team, on the best way to resolve the issue.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • The “Secondary Design – Verification and Validation Engineer”, while being independent from the project team, will work with the engineering leader on each project to develop a specific design quality plan.
  • This plan will define the actions and ‘hold points’ where the “V&V Engineer” will review elements of the design and provide approval before proceeding to the next phase, along with the identification of any areas of risk or complexity that requires additional focus.
  • These actions will be a mix of independent assessment of design information, and the attendance at key design reviews. In addition, the V&V Engineer shall advise the design team as the work progresses and investigate any non-conformances for the purpose of continuous improvement.
  • This systematic approach shall be organised in a way to ensure that the design meets the customer’s requirements, it’s functional specification, and the required standards and legislation. It is also required to confirm that the interfacing and practical elements of the design (detail design) are correctly considered, and the design is fully coordinated with the other disciplines that make up the wider substation design.
  • In addition to ensuring the design fulfils its operational requirements and can be achieved in practice, it is essential to ensure it can be constructed in an efficient and practical manner, it contains all necessary provision to undertake the required maintenance activities, and contains the necessary systems to allow this to be done safely.

Requirements

To succeed in this role, you will have the following qualifications and experience:

  • A minimum of a first degree in Power Engineering or a related electrical engineering discipline. (Or a significant amount of relevant experience which can be considered as an equivalent).
  • Extensively demonstrated years’ experience working in a senior role where your daily activities are working in either the design, or reviewing of, light current systems used in high voltage substations.

You will have a strong working knowledge of the following topics:

  • Transmission Protection design
  • Substation Control and Automation.
  • Power Systems SCADA.
  • Telecoms Design
  • Operational and Tarif Metering
  • Safety Interlocking
  • Equipment Interfacing and Cable Design

You will also have a solid understanding of the following topics:

  • The way in which high voltage substations are constructed, particularly in the case of brownfield sites, and how this requirement is supported within the design.
  • The way in which high voltage substations are maintained and the facilities needed within the design to enable this maintenance to be performed in a safe and practical manner.

Desired Characteristics

  • The successful candidate will be an experienced and proven substation design engineer who has been part of the successful delivery of a significant portfolio of high voltage substation projects.
  • You will be familiar with the light current considerations of high voltage electrical engineering and be comfortable designing them, along with the application and specification of the equipment needed to facilitate them.
  • You will be comfortable reviewing designs, both as a desk-top exercise and also as an independent expert at design reviews, and be able to clearly articulate to the designers any areas where you consider adjustments or changes are required.
  • You will be a team player, with good communication and interpersonal skills, be capable of self-management, and have a high degree of flexibility, resilience and a self-learning attitude.
