Job Description

Lead Application Developer

Location: Newcastle

Due to the nature of client work you will be undertaking, you will need to be willing to go through a Security Clearance process as part of this role, which requires 5+ years of continuous UK residence as well as no gaps of 6 months or more spent outside the UK within those 5 years. This includes a single consecutive 6-month period or multiple trips that add up to 6+ months

Hybrid Working: This role will require you to work from our Newcastle, Cobalt Business Park office 3 days per week.

As a Lead Application Developer, you will:

  • Champion engineering excellence, advocating practices such as clean code, branching strategy, coding standards, TDD, CI/CD, and continuous testing
  • Lead the design, development and integration of robust, secure, and scalable API platforms, with experience in Intel Expressway Service Gateway and API Service Gateway operational engineering.
  • Lead and guide the team through technical challenges and ensure successful delivery of high-quality solutions.
  • Manage cross-platform application development leveraging container orchestration (e.g. AKS/Kubernetes), messaging backplanes (e.g. Kafka, Zookeeper), and resilient cloud-native design patterns.
  • Implement standards and best practices, mentor junior developers, and execute development activities in line with the overall delivery plan.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, provide technical leadership, and contribute to the continuous improvement of our development processes.
  • Define technical requirements, design and develop scalable applications, and stay updated on emerging technologies and industry trends.
  • Own operational considerations including deployment automation, performance monitoring, observability and API resilience in production-grade systems.

Qualification

The following skills and experience and required for this role:

  • Strong experience in developing and maintaining large-scale backend applications using Java.
  • Ability to lead, mentor and develop junior developers.
  • Familiarity with enterprise-grade API gateway products (e.g. Intel Expressway, Kong, Apigee) and applying best practices in API lifecycle management.
  • Proven background in working with public cloud platforms, with a focus on backend development.
  • Knowledge of database technologies such as PostgreSQL.
  • Excellent leadership, communication (written and oral), and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in modern application development using CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Jenkins, GitHub Actions), Infrastructure-as-Code, and containerisation via Docker/Kubernetes.

  • Bring practical knowledge of designing for high availability, fault tolerance, and performance at scale in production-grade systems
  • Demonstrated experience managing operational resilience, including monitoring (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana), security (e.g. OAuth2, API rate-limiting), and high availability deployments.
  • Exposure to hybrid and cloud-native architecture patterns, especially in regulated environments.
  • Are confident debugging and resolving deep technical issues spanning application code, integrations, infrastructure, or performance bottlenecks
  • Ability to drive innovation within the team.
  • Stay hands-on with evolving technologies while maintaining a strong architectural mindset that balances agility with long-term maintainability
