Base pay range

Do you have demonstrable experience in construction law and the ability to deliver practical, commercial solutions? Are you ready to contribute to a diverse range of projects in a busy and rewarding role?

About us

This is an exciting time for Science Museum Group (SMG) as we seek to deliver a world class experience to our visitors nationally through a range of new objects, galleries and masterplans, alongside a range of first class, innovative consumer experiences and products.

To support this work, we are looking for a commercially astute Lawyer with construction related experience to join our corporate services team to provide legal support for a variety of projects at SMG. The role is required within the Legal Team to provide a more dedicated project resource to meet anticipated higher capital project needs for the current financial year. The role requires a pragmatic and very good understanding of construction law, but additional experience and proficiency in other relevant areas of the law is welcomed.

About the role

You will report to and be supervised by the General Counsel (working with two other lawyers and a paralegal as part of a small team) although you will be encouraged to work directly with internal clients and to run your own matters from the outset. In this role, you will need the ability to manage multiple projects, prioritise and think clearly and commercially, with a wide range of stakeholders in mind.

This is a unique opportunity for a lawyer to make an immediate and far-reaching impact on the Science Museum Group and to contribute to furthering the public\’s enjoyment and understanding of science.

This is a fixed-term contract and will continue until 31st March 2026. The 21 hours per week are worked across Monday to Friday, with flexibility around shift patterns (this will be discussed during the interview). Hybrid working is available in this role in line with the current hybrid working policy at Science Museum Group. Specific working arrangements will be agreed with the line manager of this role.

The role will be based contractually at one of the Science Museum Group national sites, although it will have a Group-wide remit, so some limited travel to other sites is possible.

About you

We\’re looking for an experienced Construction Lawyer with at least three years\’ post-qualification experience and demonstrable technical knowledge in construction law and its associated regulations. You\’ll have a proven track record of drafting and negotiating commercial contracts across a range of projects and clients, and bring a consistent, commercially pragmatic approach to your work.

With a significant increase in project and construction activity this financial year, we\’re seeking someone who can provide high-quality legal support within our Legal team and to the wider PMO. You\’ll be a clear communicator who can explain complex matters effectively to different audiences, with meticulous attention to detail and the ability to manage your time effectively in a challenging environment. We value people who are motivated, organised and committed to continuous learning, and who contribute positively to an open and inclusive workplace.

Experience in the cultural sector, charities or public procurement, and an understanding of the in-house legal advisor role, would be an advantage, but not essential. If you\’re collaborative, professional and ready to share ideas and support our busy programme of construction projects, we\’d like to hear from you.

Don\’t feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn\’t match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
