General Summary

Reports to the Team Leader – Tyre Science or designee and is located in Banbury, UK. Involves the design, development and application of advanced simulation tools with a strong focus on tyre performance analysis using track data. May require factory support during race weekends and attendance at numerous trackside races and tests.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and mentor junior and intern engineers.
  • Support the Design Office and other departments through simulations and data‑driven approaches.
  • Design, develop and correlate tools for analysing tyre performance on track and from rigs/simulation tools (lap sim, DIL, HIL).
  • Support Electronics and Control Systems in detecting and reporting sensor malfunctions; propose solutions and data‑driven investigations.
  • Contribute to pre‑and post‑event simulations and reporting to support Race Engineering; focus on improving tyre performance and tools.
  • Support race and test events throughout the weekend by following sessions live from the factory or track.
  • Work closely with Race Engineering by providing tyre performance analysis reports and responding to specific focus points at each session.
  • Propose and contribute to tyre testing activities at all trackside testing opportunities and report findings with a data‑driven approach.
  • Assist in project management – defining objectives, test plans, data post‑processing, analysis and reporting.

Education & Work Experience

  • Minimum BSc in a STEM subject with robust applied mathematics or engineering; a Master’s or PhD preferred.
  • At least five years’ experience in motor racing or vehicle dynamics/performance within mainstream automotive engineering.
  • Prior Formula One experience is beneficial.

Specialized Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Advanced understanding of tyre performance KPI and engineering.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of onboard sensors and instrumentation used to monitor tyre performance.
  • Strong technical background in racing cars and basic tyre modelling.
  • High‑standard performance under stressful, time‑sensitive situations.
  • Quick decision‑making with scientific and analytical approach.
  • Team player with a sympathetic, can‑do attitude.

Equipment & Applications

  • Solid experience with MATLAB & Simulink; proficient in object‑oriented coding (MATLAB, C#, or C++).
  • Experience with symbolic and acausal modelling languages (Modelica, SimScape, or similar multi‑body/physical modelling tools) is favourable.
  • Experience with application management in a vTAG environment (System Monitor, GDE libraries) is favourable.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and solid computer knowledge.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

High‑pressure, time‑sensitive environment requiring methodical approach. May require extensive domestic and international travel; willingness to work long, flexible hours including weekends. Physical demands include lifting up to 50 lbs, repeated bending, squatting and manual dexterity. Exposure to machinery, race cars, rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids. Compliance with Company Health and Safety Policy and statutory legislation is mandatory.
