We are seeking an experienced Electrical Protection and Control Design Engineer to support the delivery of high–voltage electrical infrastructure projects across the power and renewables sector in the UK. You will be responsible for the detailed design of protection and control systems for various P&R projects.
This role is critical in ensuring technically robust and compliant designs that support the successful construction, testing, and commissioning of HV and EHV assets.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and deliver detailed protection and control designs from concept through to IFC (Issued for Construction).
- Develop and review design documents including:
- Protection schemes and philosophies
- Protection settings and coordination studies
- Single line diagrams (SLDs), schematics, and wiring diagrams
- Interlocking and tripping logi
- Specify and select protection relays and IEDs to meet project and client requirements.
- Conduct protection grading and fault studies using software tools such as ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, or PSCAD.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant standards
- Interface with internal project teams, construction, commissioning engineers, and external stakeholders.
- Support the preparation of design risk assessments, technical queries, and design change controls.
- Collaborate on factory acceptance testing (FAT) documentation and site commissioning strategies.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of design practices and standardisation across projects.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Degree–qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in electrical protection and control design for HV/MV projects.
- Strong knowledge of HV/EHV substation systems (11kV to 400kV).
- Proficiency with protection coordination and modelling software (e.g., ETAP, DIgSILENT).
- Understanding of SCADA, automation systems, and communication protocols (IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus) is beneficial.
- High attention to detail with strong documentation and drawing production skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and work collaboratively in a multi–disciplinary environment.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to sites and offices across Scotland.
