The Paint Manufacturing Engineer within GMA is responsible for detail planning, development and coordination of production processes which enable production of high-quality vehicles across all models undertaken by Gordon Murray Automotive. Working together with GMAE members to continuously improve / develop manufacturing process to achieve Quality, Cost and Delivery targets. Identify unsafe operations and practices, establish safety procedures and meet environmental regulations for employees.
Key Responsibilities
Production Process Planning & Development
- Plan, develop, and coordinate production processes to achieve Quality, Cost, and Delivery (QCD) targets.
- Own vehicle build sequencing through virtual, prototype, and production phases.
- Perform root cause analysis and implement resolutions.
- Conduct PFMEA & DFMEA activities and approve engineering releases/changes.
- Evaluate and improve current production activities while implementing cost reduction initiatives.
Manufacturing & Engineering Support
- Develop and optimise manufacturing processes, working with design engineers to produce jigs, fixtures, and tooling.
- Provide engineering support for production and maintenance to meet QCD targets.
- Train and guide team members to accomplish production goals.
- Stay updated with product specifications, engineering technology, and production processes.
Paint Process & Facility Development
- Own and develop paint processes, working with suppliers on colour development and application.
- Use paint test equipment (hardness, film thickness, adhesion testing).
- Aid in the design, installation, and completion of Building 3 (paint shop).
- Validate new model paint fixture designs and develop decorated stock fixtures.
Operational & Quality Improvements
- Maintain department to an audit standard, logging tooling and decreasing faults per vehicle.
- Monitor and manage Hours Per Car (HPC) data for series production.
- Coordinate maintenance and repair services to ensure equipment remains operational.
- Review, develop, and implement new model processes.
Skills, Knowledge And Expertise
- Relevant manufacturing/engineering degree preferred, A Levels, ONC, City & Guilds level 3, BTec National Diploma Level 3, IVQ Technician Diploma, or equivalent NVQ level 3 qualification.
- Experience of full product life-cycle activities and ability to achieve Quality, Cost and Delivery targets for production.
- Experience of FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis), Kaizen/A3 (continuous improvement and problem solving) process improvement and Poka Yoke (error proofing) techniques.
- Ability to create manufacturing process development plans and schedule own activities.
- Experience in managing suppliers.
- Able to use a variety of IT Packages (e.g. Office 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook,
- Teams, Smartsheets, Power BI)) at an advanced standard.
- Clear and effective communication skills with internal and external clients.
- Organised, persuasive, resourceful, flexible, ambitious, self-managing, passion for delivering objectives, comfortable challenging existing processes.
- Share and cascade information and communicate new processes
- Automotive paint experience at an appropriate consultancy or OEM preferred.
