With plans to see SP Energy Networks (SPEN), part of the ScottishPower Group, look to invest over £10bn in transmission projects across our transmission network in central and southern Scotland by 2030, the Protection and Control Engineering team will play key roles in supporting SPEN to work at pace to deliver the transmission network that is required to support ambitions Scottish and UK Government 2030 targets.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to be at the forefront of innovative engineering! You will be paving the way to NetZero using new technologies to develop and deliver engineering solutions for transmission networks (132kV and above) for the ever-evolving energy landscape.

As a vital part of SPEN, you will be exposed to a wide range of new and emerging responsibilities, and at a pivotal time as ScottishPower leads the fight against climate change and strives to deliver our ambitious growth and investment plans. You can expect to be working with and learning from a broad range of stakeholders from across SPEN, the Iberdrola Group and relevant external bodies.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Be responsible for basic and detailed engineering of projects from concept to commissioning; the development of technical specifications, tender evaluations, drawings and settings & configurations.
  • Support the development of pre-contract design and delivery of projects by leading/supporting the technical aspects.
  • Develop innovative and sustainable solutions for a growing and diverse network.
  • Assess engineering documentation, feasibility and compliance with business requirements and support the preparation of accurate budgets for new projects.
  • Ensure adherence to current legislation, policies and operational requirements.
  • Provide technical support to the Project team and site/construction teams during the lifespan of the project.
  • Responsible for engineering documentation following quality processes to meet deliverables for PQP’s and BETTA.
  • Assist with evaluation and apply ‘new ideas’, technical developments, new equipment and alternative working methods to provide cost savings, efficiencies and improved safety, reflected in review of policies and standards.
  • Provide guidance/training to developing engineers and graduates to progress their technical knowledge.

What You’ll Bring

  • Degree in an Engineering discipline with relevant experience.
  • Good inter-personal and communication skills and the ability to form effective working relationships with other individuals, departments and businesses.
  • Ability to implement, apply and promote CDM and Health & Safety best practice in a design environment.
  • Experience developing detailed design of substation protection and control systems, including drawings, settings calculations and development of IED settings/configuration files.
  • Research, development and implementation of new technologies and engineering solutions to achieve high standards and implement reductions in project lifetime costs.
  • Proven experience implementing IEC 61850 solutions with knowledge in developing configurations such as SCD, ICD and CID files and an understanding of IP networking principles.
  • Experience utilising PCM 600, Digsi5 and Enervista advantageous but not essential.
