What You\’ll Do
Space agencies around the world are investing heavily into lunar exploration with the aim of establishing the Moon as a platform for mankind to become a multi-planetary species. Lunar exploration missions are furthering key scientific objectives around surviving and prospering in space as well as providing information on the origins of life as a whole. The lunar roadmap foresees in-situ resource utilisation on the Moon to establish a permanent human presence during the 2030s, as well as using the Moon as a “refuelling station” for further space exploration to Mars and beyond.
As part of the investment into lunar exploration, European Space Agency (ESA) created the Moonlight programme – a private-public partnership. Moonlight will develop new communications and navigation capabilities and services that will be provided to missions on and around the Moon through the launch of dedicated infrastructure.
Viasat is entering the programme as the design authority for the communications service, responsible to design and procurement of the space segment, ground segment and user infrastructure to provide communications services by the end of the decade.
We are looking for a System Design Engineer to work across the program Segment teams, our customer needs, and Systems team. You will work on identifying how to apply complex and innovative solutions to real world problems for the development of our unique product range.
You will play a key role by supporting systems engineering and all segment leads on one or more System level requirement needs. In addition to Systems Engineering activities, you will also provide technical support to future bid proposal efforts. This involves collaborating closely with subsystem teams to develop technical solutions and ensuring coherency across technical subject areas.\”
The day-to-day
One key part of the role is requirements engineering, where you will take on the challenge to understand and help define the technical content of the solution across all design disciplines.
Your technical involvement will cover the whole development lifecycle from initial concept through development and verification. Moreover, you will partner closely with the Technical Project Manager for delivery of the project to time, cost, quality and performance requirements.
Some specific needs are :
- Set up JAMA project with appropriate item types
- Set up JAMA project structure and import existing documentation
- Linking requirements across the various levels and identifying gaps
- Working with Systems Engineering Lead and segment SMEs to develop existing links
- Work with Systems Engineering Lead and segment teams to update requirements, ensuring we maintain traceability.
- Day to day management of updates and process.
What You\’ll Need
- Proven track record of industrial experience in a related area and a degree-level qualification in a relevant field.
- Experience of the systems engineering lifecycle, including requirements management, system design process and product validation and verification
- Good understanding and appreciation of all design disciplines, likely to have expertise in at least one.
- Ability to produce clear and concise technical documentation.
- Experience in using DOORs for requirements management
Are you considering expanding your domain? This role would be a great fit for an experienced system engineer or an electronics/software engineer wishing to move into a role with a wider scope of responsibilities.
What Will Help You On The Job
- Ability to handle complexity, uncertainty and competing demands
- Demonstrable experience of problem-solving skills.
- Ability to demonstrate and apply system-level thinking
- Ability to spot areas of concern, investigate and drive to a solution – ask the right questions.
