Role Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced Lead Engineer – Fuel Systems for a 12+ month contract inside IR35. In this role, you will lead the design and development of diesel engine fuel system components from concept through production, ensuring technical excellence, cross-functional collaboration, and delivery to defined targets. You will be responsible for setting up and managing design control processes and providing technical leadership across the project lifecycle.

Function Overview

This position supports the Engineering, Research & Development (ER&D) function, contributing to complex engineering programmes for global clients. You will take ownership of a defined module within at least one major project, providing leadership in technical delivery, coordination of design teams, and collaboration with cross-functional and supplier stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end development of diesel fuel system components including fuel lines, filters, and fuel tanks

  • Understand and apply full fuel system assembly processes

  • Provide expert technical input across design, development, packaging, and validation

  • Drive component- and system-level packaging studies and feasibility assessments

  • Collaborate with Project Engineers to define and coordinate design activities

  • Design components from prototype through production, adhering to GD&T and design standards

  • Act as the main point of contact for design-related engineering matters

  • Identify opportunities for weight, cost, and complexity reduction

  • Ensure all components meet defined technical specifications, weight, and cost targets

  • Apply Design for Assembly (DFA), Design for Manufacture (DFM), and Design for Service (DFS) principles

  • Create and review early-stage engineering concepts, lead and attend design reviews

  • Manage engineering release (ER) processes ensuring complete documentation, CAE alignment, supplier input, and resolution of build concerns

  • Participate in on-site/off-site reviews related to build readiness and support

  • Support prototype builds and development builds

  • Prepare RFQs (Request for Quotation) and ESOWs (Engineering Statements of Work) for new components

  • Conduct feasibility and development reviews with suppliers, including build support and issue resolution

  • Coordinate and approve ECRs/ECNs for in-development and production components

  • Interface with CAE teams for validation of fuel system components

  • Plan and support testing activities including DVP, PVP, and homologation

  • Liaise with PD, Buyers, and Suppliers for prototype build support

  • Maintain and update Bill of Materials (BOM)

Required Knowledge & Experience

  • Proficiency in PTC CREO is essential

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in design engineering roles at an OEM or Tier-1 supplier

  • Demonstrated ownership and delivery of fuel system designs across full development lifecycle

  • Proven experience with at least one of the following systems:

    • Fuel Lines

    • Fuel Filters

    • Fuel Tanks

  • Knowledge of mounting strategies, material selection, NVH targets

  • Understanding of validation and quality tools: CFD, CAE, DVP, DFMEA, RMDV

  • Strong background in plastic moulding and manufacturing processes

  • Track record of delivering to strict timing, cost, and weight targets

  • Comfortable working with suppliers and implementing DFM/DFA principles
