Senior Highway Engineer (Drainage)

We are recruiting for a Senior Drainage Engineer to play a key role in advising on drainage matters throughout the county as well as being involved in the design of highways and school drainage schemes across Lancashire.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to work on a wide range of highway drainage projects with an opportunity to provide guidance on the latest strategies to include Sustainable Drainage measures across a wide range of small, medium and large highway, public realm and school schemes. We have a wide range of capital projects that we are working on or will be starting to work on in the very near future which you will provide the drainage advice and design for. These projects are part of our capital programme or follow success in attracting external funding opportunities or directly support business and housing regeneration in Lancashire.

Some of the schemes we are currently working on or have recently delivered include:

  • Burnley Pendle Hyndburn Growth Corridor programme which concentrated on highway and junction improvements to promote economic regeneration in East Lancashire,
  • Delivery of major section 278 work in Preston city centre to support development for the University of Central Lancashire,
  • Design of a new major highway link road with challenging ground conditions,
  • We are working in partnership with District councils and stakeholders on public realm improvements within their towns,
  • Ambitious delivery of a number of Transforming Cities funded schemes.

Supervising a team of engineers, you and your team will identify and develop design solutions for highway drainage issues. Your team will liaise with other internal engineering teams in order to fully undertake detail design and prepare drawings, schedules and documents. You will support junior team members and help them with their development.

You will have a working knowledge of current standards relating to highway drainage design and current sustainable drainage measures, including reduction of flood risk factors. You will have experience of the design and delivering projects to budget and programme and supporting contractors in the delivery of the construction phase of projects. You will have experience of mentoring and leading junior members of staff. You will have the right to work in the UK, and be based here.

If you have strong highway drainage engineering skills, are a good communicator and have a customer focused approach to service delivery then we would be delighted to hear from you. For an informal discussion about this role, please contact the Highway Design Manager Rina Housbey on 01772 533763.

We offer an attractive benefits package including:

  • Generous annual leave allocation, 26 days (rising to 32 days after five years service) plus eight bank holidays and two extra statutory days)
  • Local Government Pension scheme
  • Learning and development opportunities
  • Childcare vouchers (salary sacrifice)
