Job Purpose
- As the Lead Quality Engineer initially within the Finance & Data Reporting Product Team, this role will be responsible for leading the testing efforts that ensure the quality, accuracy, and reliability of our data warehouse and related data products. This role is expected to evolve further, eventually encompassing key applications within the Core Finance Product Team.
- Your expertise in testing within a data-intensive environment will be crucial, as you’ll be focused on validating large-scale data flows, data integrity, ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes, and performance optimization.
- In this role, the Lead Quality Engineer will define and implement a robust testing strategy tailored specifically to the data warehouse ecosystem, where data accuracy and consistency are paramount. The Lead Quality Engineer will work closely with the Enterprise Product Manager and the respective Engineering Delivery Lead to ensure that the testing approach aligns with the needs of the business, the complexities of data integration, and the expectations of stakeholders. This includes balancing both manual and automated testing methods, depending on the complexity and criticality of the data involved.
- A significant aspect of this role will be ensuring that data pipelines and transformations are thoroughly validated, not just for functional correctness but also for data quality metrics such as consistency, completeness, and timeliness. You will lead efforts to create a testing framework that integrates seamlessly with our CI/CD pipeline, enabling automated validation of data quality checks and regression tests across multiple stages of the data pipeline—from extraction to transformation to final loading into the data warehouse.
This role will have a matrix-based reporting structure, reporting operationally to the Quality Engineering Manager and functionally to the respective Engineering Delivery Lead for delivery oversight.
Key Responsibilities
Test Leadership & Collaboration:
- Act as a quality advocate within the Product team, working with cross-functional Agile team members (Engineering Delivery Leads, Developers, offshore testers, Product Owner, Business Analysts) to ensure high-quality test deliverables.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive testing strategy for data pipelines, ETL processes, and data quality validation.
- Build a high-performing test team that can work effectively with both the business and delivery teams to ensure clear communication of testing priorities, progress, and results.
- Foster a collaborative environment, where testers understand business requirements and can translate them into comprehensive test plans.
- Train and mentor team members to develop their skills in data warehouse testing, helping them grow in areas like data validation and automated testing.
- Collaborate with the Quality Engineering Practice to facilitate and improve testing practices, establish the framework to track quality metrics such as test coverage, automation coverage (%), defect density, defect leakage etc.
Test Delivery
- Report on test findings, data quality metrics, and risks to both technical and business stakeholders.
- Provide actionable insights and recommendations based on testing outcomes, ensuring alignment with business needs.
- Share best practices and guidance on data validation, automated testing, and performance testing within a data warehouse context.
- Continuously improve testing processes, frameworks, and test harnesses to enhance coverage, efficiency, and accuracy.
- Drive improvements in data quality, reduce errors, and streamline testing workflows.
Hands-On Testing & Test Automation
- Validate data flows through ETL processes, ensuring accuracy, transformation logic, and proper loading into the data warehouse, focusing on data quality, including consistency, completeness, and correctness.
- Evaluate when manual testing or automation is required, with a focus on automating repeatable tests and manually testing high-risk or complex data scenarios.
- Integrate automated tests into the CI/CD pipeline to continuously validate data quality and transformation.
- Build on and improve the existing reusable test harnesses to automate data validation across various stages of the ETL pipeline.
- Ensure test harnesses integrate seamlessly with data engineering workflows, enabling consistent and efficient testing across environments.
- Lead performance testing for data warehouse operations, including ETL jobs and query performance, ensuring scalability, low latency, and fast query response times in large-scale data environments.
- Collaborate with the QE Practice in defining & baselining the target test strategy including automation & performance test approach.
Performance Objectives
- Adapt quickly to the assigned product team and ways of working.
- Effective collaboration with key product team stakeholders (EDL, PO, BA, Dev Lead & offshore partner team) and demonstrate testing contribution.
