As a Quality Assurance and Quality Control Engineer – Welding Inspector, you\’ll have a role that\’s out of the ordinary. You\’ll be at the heart of our mission to deliver world-class engineering solutions for the Royal Navy. You\’ll ensure the integrity and quality of welding operations across submarine and surface ship projects, helping to maintain the safety and performance of critical defence assets. This is a dynamic and rewarding role that offers real impact, career progression, and the chance to work on some of the most advanced engineering projects in the UK. Day-to-day, you\’ll prepare welding QA documentation, review inspection packs, advise on welding methods, conduct visual inspections, and liaise with engineering and project stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Producing welding-related QA documentation, including Weld Information Sheets and method statements
  • Reviewing welding and non-destructive testing (NDT) quality packs prior to final acceptance
  • Identifying optimal welding and weld repair methods for quality, productivity, and cost-effectiveness
  • Conducting visual inspections before, during, and after welding activities
  • Advising and liaising with frontline managers, engineers, clients, and representatives
  • This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard and may require occasional travel to other Babcock UK sites.

Essential experience

  • Strong knowledge of welding processes and techniques in structural and pipe systems
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and welding joint symbols
  • Understanding of BSEN ISO 3834-2 and its role in welding QA/QC
  • Proven experience in creating welding documentation (e.g., Weld Information Sheets)
  • Excellent communication and computer literacy skills

Qualifications

  • Craft Apprenticeship or City & Guilds in Fabrication/Engineering or equivalent

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
