The role

As aWelding Quality Assurance and Control Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. Join our Welding QAQC Engineering team, delivering critical welding assurance across Devonport and UK projects. Day-to-day, you’ll conduct welding inspections and oversees QAQC activities to ensure standards compliance, maintain documentation, support traceability, and drive continuous improvement in fabrication and repair.

  • Produce welding quality assurance documentation, including Weld Information Sheets and method statements for emergent or repair work
  • Review welding and Non Destructive Testing (NDT) quality packs for compliance prior to final approval
  • Recommend optimal welding and repair methods balancing quality, efficiency, and cost
  • Monitor welding activities to ensure adherence to Babcock Quality Management System and BS EN ISO 3834-2 standards
  • Perform visual weld inspections and support technical discussions with teams and clients, drawing on practical fabrication and pipework experience

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Essential experience of the Welding Quality Assurance and Control Engineer

  • Strong knowledge of welding processes, materials, and fabrication techniques across structural and pipe systems on submarines and surface ships
  • Proficient in reading engineering drawings, interpreting weld symbols, and applying relevant welding standards and acceptance criteria
  • Familiar with BS EN ISO 3834-2 quality requirements and the QAQC responsibilities essential to welding assurance
  • Experienced in producing welding documentation (e.g. Weld Information Sheets) and solving technical challenges with clarity and precision
  • Effective communicator with good computer literacy, and practical experience or understanding of hands-on welding work preferred

Qualifications for the Welding Quality Assurance and Control Engineer

  • Completed Craft Apprenticeship or NVQ/City & Guilds in a Fabrication or Engineering discipline, or equivalent
  • CSWIP 3.1 Visual Weld Inspection qualification desirable (training available post-appointment)
  • Willingness to train for Radiation Worker and Confined Space Entry certification
  • NSQAC qualification preferred (training provided if needed)
  • Opportunity to complete Nuclear Plant Foundation training upon appointment
