At Great Western Railway (GWR), our stations team is at the heart of everything we do – welcoming passengers, ensuring smooth and safe journeys, and creating a memorable experience from first step to final destination. As an Assistant Flagship Station Manager, you\’ll play a vital role in shaping this experience across multiple stations – with Bristol Temple Meads as your base.
About the Role?
This isn\’t a desk job. As a visible and proactive leader, you\’ll spend much of your time on the move – out on the concourse, engaging with your team, supporting passengers, and ensuring the highest standards of service and safety. You\’ll lead frontline colleagues, take on key operational responsibilities, and support the Station Manager in keeping our stations running efficiently and professionally.
You\’ll oversee a number of stations across the region, including the Severn Beach Line and North Somerset, and work closely with Network Rail at Bristol Temple Meads to deliver a first-class service.
What You\’ll Be Doing?
- Leading and coaching a large, diverse team of station colleagues and Duty Station Managers
- Taking ownership of safety, performance, service delivery, and cost control
- Representing GWR and building relationships with local communities and stakeholders
- Making confident, effective decisions in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
- Deputising for the Station Manager when required
- Providing visible leadership during both day-to-day operations and unexpected challenges
What You\’ll Bring?
- Proven leadership experience in a people-focused environment
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills – you\’ll be engaging with everyone from frontline staff to external partners
- Resilience, flexibility, and the ability to adapt quickly in a changing environment
- Confidence in making decisions under pressure and managing a busy, operational workload
- Familiarity with IT systems and reporting tools
- An understanding of railway operations, including safety critical duties and ticketing, along with experience working within a unionised environment is a strong advantage
- Knowledge of Network Rail Managed Stations agreements and GWR procedures is desirable
- Experience in project management is a bonus

- Shift-based role with weekend, bank holiday, and out-of-hours working as needed
- On-call requirement (currently approx. 1 in 5 weeks)

- Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a competency-based interview tentatively scheduled week commencing 21st July.
- Successful applicants will need to pass a medical assessment and drug and alcohol screening, as well as a Basic DBS check.
