Pay Range
Base salary for newly appointed Border Patrol Agents (BPA) is $49,739.00 per year for GL-5 and $89,518.00 per year for GL-7.
Duty Assignments
Duty assignments available at the time of offer may include the Southwest Border and other prioritized locations. Relocation may be required. The U.S. Border Patrol determines assignments based on operational needs.
Recruitment Incentives
Newly appointed BPAs will be offered a $20,000 incentive, $10,000 paid upon successfully completing training at the Border Patrol Academy and the remainder paid after completing a three‑year service agreement. BPAs accepting a prioritized location will be eligible for an additional $10,000.

Duties and Responsibilities
As a BPA, you will protect the American people by safeguarding borders, deterring illicit activity, and enhancing economic prosperity.
- Detect and question individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws.
- Prevent and apprehend undocumented noncitizens and smugglers using surveillance, infrared scopes, and covert positions.
- Interpret physical evidence of illegal entry or contraband.
- Perform checks: farm, building, traffic, city, transportation, and patrol international boundaries and coastal waterways.
- Use government assets: vehicles, horses, vessels, watercraft, off‑road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles.
Qualifications
GL-5:
- One year of general work experience or a bachelor’s degree.
- Combination of experience and education acceptable.
GL-7:
- One year of specialized work experience with skills in firearm use, courteous communication, rapid analysis, and arrest decision‑making.
- Education substitution: bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (3.0+ GPA, class standing, or honor society).
- Combination of experience and education acceptable.
Other Requirements
- U.S. citizenship.
- Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
- Age restriction: must be referred before turning 40 (exceptions for federal civilian law enforcement veterans).
- Veterans’ preference eligibility allows exception to age restriction.
Formal Training
Six months of intensive instruction at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy: immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement, operations, driver training, physical techniques, firearms, and Spanish language proficiency.
